Rear Main Seal Replacement w/Pics
Though you guys might want to see what is involved in replacing the RMS seal. I have a post over in our Imagine Auto blog at http://www.turbo911.com/showthread.php?p=1377#post1377 with pictures on the procedure.
I for some reason phased out taking pictures of the tranny drop, but i will document that as it is going back in. New clutch will be in monday, so look for the update sometime monday night or tuesday. |
Hey Doc, have you ever done a 3.4 engine swap in an older boxster?
how about a turbo or supercharger? they seem very rare for this car.
Havent done a 3.4 swap yet, but we will have the supercharger for the S done sometime early in the year.
Thanks for the pics doc. Sounds like the tranny is pretty sturdy.
How much of a difference will the SC make and what's the expected cost with labor?
So you just pop out that seal and pop another back in? Any special tools? More info please. How long does it take, in hours?
I think book lists it at 9 hours. Pop the old seal out (easier said than done, but it is like removing any other rear main), and there is actually a special tool to set the correct depth of the rear main seal. Also, the tool was updated to a new style with a deeper depth, which is one of the reasons the seal leaked, because of not being set correctly in the case. You also replace 4 case bolts and 3 intermediate shaft flange bolts which are all right there. There are updated bolts with a sealant on them that need to be used.
On the supercharger, the 2.5L kit saw an increse of 100hp to the rear wheels, so we are looking for at least that on the 3.2's. 2.5L runs 7k plus install which will be somewhere from 15-20 hours (haven't done enough tests runs yet to get the exact number), and the 3.2's will run about 8k plus install (same install, cost increase is due to custom headers that will be used). |
