Is the oil change something that is a DIY thing - or does this need to be done my the dealer?

Is there a DIY thread or instructions on this anywhere??

I will be doing this in the coming weeks.

Oil change is so DIY it isn't funny. One oil drain plug, 1 filter, 10 quarts of 0w-40 mobil 1 oil. Nothing special about doing it in the boxster.

With that being said, our local Porsche dealer somehow does oil changes with mobil 1 for $54.95, which is less than you can buy 10 quarts of oil and a filter for.

Man, I wish my dealer did it for that! :eek:

Don't forget, 1 new crush ring for the drain plug. ;)

WOW, are your kidding me! $55 for an oil change. I need to move to KC.

$55 is a GREAT DEAL. Niello Porsche in Rocklin charges $180 for a oil change.

Yea, we were doing oil changes at the shop for 109 bucks with mobil one. We had to drop them to 79 bucks, which is what it costs us to do it, just to try and stay competitive. Now it is more of a convienence thing for the customers more than anything.

I think it is 9 qts of oil.

threpwood, you need to buy a floor jack and start doing this yourself. You'll pay for the jack the first time you do it, and it will only take 15 minutes in your driveway!

Isn't there a special adapter we need to adapt the floor jack to the recepticle in the body?

Where do we get that?

my floor jack is a race jack from Pep Boys and it had a nice, wide 4 inch rubber base on it that requires no jack pad insert. I bought it for this reason, and it wasn't expensive...something like $74.

this is dirt cheap!!
here they charge you €150 ($180.54 to be precise)per hour of labour plus oil and bits, it cost around €200 for oil change, they actually charged me €10 to change a bulb last year, it was more expensive than the bulb Doh!!

Hockey pucks work well as jack pads on a convential jack.
This is a very easy job. Much easier than most other cars.

No ones mentioned the oil cooler drain plug, is this not important? I thought this prevented all the oil from being drained completely?

mikedivincent, if you decided to take on this task and go shopping for a floor jack. Make sure you purchase one that compresses below 4 inches. Not all floor jacks will compress this low. The one I purchased will compress to 3 ½ inches and it works great. The racing floor jacks like RandallNeighbour mention usually compress low enough to fix under the Boxster.

The Boxster does not have an Oil Cooler in the traditional sense. Most cars have a separate radiator through which Oil, rather than Coolant, flows to cool it by using airflow through the Oil Cooler to extract the heat to atmosphere.

The Boxster uses an Oil/Coolant Heat Exchanger mounted on the engine. This Heat Exchanger does just that, extracts the heat from the Oil by the Coolant, which then passes it to atmosphere through the radiators on the front of the car. The Center radiator on the Boxster S is just that, and additional Coolant radiator, not an Oil Cooler. FYI...

Wow, $55 for an oil change! I can certainly deal with that. I'm likely moving to KC in the next couple months so I'll certainly make use of that!
