Just bought a 2000 Boxster S

I just purchased a 2000 Boxster S, Biarritz White that had only 37K miles on the clock and it looks like it was kept in a musuem. It is in mint condition and the mechanic found no issues whatsoever. The engine purrs smoothly and it is exciting to drive. I am excited. I look forward to learning more about this car.

Congrats Sailynn. Try to learn about the Intermediate Shaft issue that exists to some extent in some of these cars. White has been growing on me as a color for Porsches in general.

Enjoy !

Welcome Sailynn. You will find a bunch of Boxster enthusiasts and experts in/around your area - assuming you're in the triangle, NC area.

My new '02 White Boxster S

I do live in the Triangle are of NC. Paid $17K.

Say, would it be worth it to buy an extended warranty for $12,000 that covers for 3 years or when the odometer reaches 74K miles? Pays for engine parts, tranny parts, axles, seals and gaskets, reasonable labor costs, electrical system and cooling system if needing repairs.

Also, for $500, there is a key warranty that will replace keys if lost, damaged or non-function for 5 years? What does a replacement key cost, $350?

Sorry, warranty costs $1,200 not $12,000. TYPO.

I would say no.

I'm very new to the 986 Porsche community, and I'm surprised at the sheer vastness of knowledge and available parts that allow even the casual DIYer to fix almost anything that goes wrong. Other than the IMS, RMS, and water pump, I've gathered that these cars are surprisingly reliable for being "exotic". $1200 almost pays for an LN Engineering ceramic IMS bearing, upgraded 997-style RMS, and the labor to install them anyway.

Cool...I just moved back from VA. I believe there are still coffee meets on weekends, in the Triangle area, and sometimes the Ferrari group mingles in.

Enjoy the new-to-you Boxster and wave to other Porsche owners, regardless if they wave back or not...your karma increases.

I would buy the warranty if you plan on adding some miles. I would pass on the key warranty unless you plan on losing both keys...Nice looking car BTW.

That $1,200 is better spent covering the cost of upgrading the IMS bearing. Doubt your warranty company is going to cover an IMS failure.

The language in those warranties is typically pretty explicit. You have to have all maintenance done on time, at a 'certified' shop, not sure if this means the dealer in your case, but usually NOTHING can be DIY, not an oil change or a simple air filter replacement. All work most be documented and timely. Which means you'll have spent a nice chunk of change on service.

Once you exlcude wear and tear items which are almost never covered, the warranty really covers very little. Basically the only warranty worth having is the extended one directly from the factory. Put your extra cash towards an annual $2K nest egg for the major maintenance items that come in around 60-80K miles.

Very nice. I purchased my 01 S last May, but it had much higher mileage. Welcome to the forum, and welcome to fun.
