How do I get this rattle to stop?

I've had this rattle that I thought was coming from the dash area, but today I found it was the two plastic blanks just behind the interior dome light, and just in front of the convertible top latching handle.
Since my car don't have anything behind these buttons, they are just blank for filler.
I realized today that I could put my hand on them, and the rattle would stop. So I just popped them out. They came out too easy, in my opinion.

My question, if I get two new ones, should they fit tighter, and therefore stop the rattle, or is there another solution to stop them from rattling around in the slot they fit into?

And no, I don't want to just leave them out. :)

If I'm understanding you correctly, those are the infrared cabin movement sensors for the alarm system, not optional switch locations. Can't help with replacements, but I'm sure someone can point you in the right direction. Alternatively, you could just find a way to make them more secure and rattle free.

put dabs of silicon on the tabs of the infrared sensor covers. then place back in position, let set for 24hours and voila

Remove them from the vehicle and place into a cup of really hot water for a few minutes. Then, remove from water and "flatten" them out by hand a bit (bending the tabs outward) while they cool. This will ensure tabs grab the housing a bit tighter eliminating rattle. Repeat if they begin to rattle again in the future... i.e. another 14 or so years (on your '99).

Good luck :)

had the same problem not too long ago. didn't do the hot water, just a dap of silicone to snug it up. still comes out when i pry on it and doesn't rattle.

Thanks guys, I think I will try the dabs of silicone. Seems like a quick fix.

Then I will be on to the next rattle. :)
