i drove my Boxster whenever I could; too much fun not to. Since trading to a 991, raising eyebrows and facing big spender comments, I simply reply "save for 60 years like I did". That ends the negative comments.

I dont have a daily job now. I am a service and application engineer for a machine mfg company for the New England region, and i go to a variety of company ranging from a mom and pop machine shop to recent visits at places like Rolls-Royce, GM, Continental, etc. I think at the big boys they would never notice what i drive in with, and id rather be seen driving my chick car in the summer rather than a rental econo box:rolleyes:

I drive my 2001 every day to work and have to say it is the highlight of my day. I know this will sound funny but this is the only car i have had that I love to wash. Every morning I stand just inside my garage drinking coffee as I watch her warm up on the driveway. Then walking out after work , ya you know what i am talking about.:dance:

It is weird for me, I store my boxster for the winter only because I don't want to get winter tires for it and the fact that it has never seen snow in 12 years. However, in the summer, it is literally the beater car. I drive it everywhere and love it. I have no problems putting miles on it, letting friends borrow it, or just pounding on it - it has always faithfully taken the beating like a champ.

DD Boxster. 70 miles every day.

Daily 5 mile trip to work and back plus trip home and back at lunch.

I'm pretty surprised at the responses people get from others about driving a Porsche! I don't know if I'm just unobservant but...

I daily drive my 987 and now my 981. I get the occasional joke about how much money I must make... But other than that I've never gotten negative attitudes towards it...

Or maybe I just don't know what they're REALLY saying... LoL

986 vs 987
 

I am looking to get a Boxster to daily drive in So Cal. I have driven both 986 and 987's. From a drivability, reliability and cost of repair, would a newer 2006 987 be a better choice than a 2000 or 2001. I like the 986, but worried that due to age, might need lots of little repairs. Initial cost is a lot less, does that get eaten up by the multiple $500-$800 fixes

get a PPI on any you choose.

Generally speaking, the youngest one you can afford will be your best bet. More likely to be better maintained and less worn, and if you're not particular to the styling of the 986 over the 987, then you've got even less to decide on. Spend the money up front on a younger car (and a PPI, always) and you'll be better off.

Read everything you can about the Boxster on these forums. Note the thread on this forum about Buying a Boxster. I bought a 2001 Boxster base with 30k miles 2 years ago and have no complaints. Do not be in a hurry. It is a buyers' market. Try different years of Boxsters. Note the differences between the different years. Options? Manual vs Tiptronic, heated seats, psm etc. Note IMS issues and differences between years. Get a PPI of one you like. Accident damage? Everything works? Try putting top up and down. Plan on $1-2k a year as normal maintenance on older models. Make sure all warning lights light up before you start the engine!Especially the CEL light. Enjoy the search.
