I think that you will find that 'colour' was originally spelt this way, the original occupants of the US had a completely different word for when they were discussing things in their wigwams.
The immigrants who occupy the country now didn't know how to spell and forgot to take a dictionary hence 'color' and a heap more incorrectly spelt words.

Americans have no incorrectly spelled words. Like dentistry and fluoridated drinking water, we have made improvements for the sake of English-speaking civil society.
And we like to take words back to the original Latin... instead of keeping up the traditions of any un-invited Normans.
