Top gear Cayman S review

http://www.racingflix.com/getvideo.asp?v=1348

Jeremy Clarkson was pretty harsh. The first negative review I've seen on the Cayman. He said he actually liked the Boxster better! The track test is worth the price of admission alone. Good vid worth the time downloading.

Jeremy is a bit of an idiot and makes no sense at times. He did a review for the Boxster where he spent half the time crying about the fact that the Boxster wasn't a 911 and that buying a boxster was settling for second best. He even complained that it was too slot car-precise-like.

Top gear did an excellent show where it searched for the best purist true sportscar (2 seater, RWD, convertible/targa,etc). Top Gear (including F1 driver Tiff Nedell) concluded that among the Lotus Elise, HOnda S2000, Miata, a street legal racing car, and a few other cars that the Boxster was the world's purest and best sportscar. And it made a special note at pointing out its excellent resale value.

I bought the Boxster a week after watching this show.

Jeremy obviously has a grudge with Porsche, but he does have a few good points. The Cayman S fits too perfect between the Boxster and 911. I agree with him 100% that a car should be created to be the best it can be, not to fill a gap. Everyone knows that both the Boxster and Cayman can easily best the 911 but will never happen. That is sad.

I saw the show you are talking about. There can't be a scintilla of doubt in your head that the Boxster is by far a great sports car on its own. Its not the hand me down 911. Place enough turns in a road track you will see the 986-987 outshine the competition. Put them in a long straight and lots of horsepower will overcome the tenacity and craftiness of the car. I am sure when Rurhl driving the Cayman in Nuringburg Ring came in faster than a 997 Carrera giving away 40 hp was probably a faux pas that was not meant to be. We all know the 911 will be safeguarded but even 911 drivers know that Boxster and Cayman will do rings around them. That is ipso facto. Don't torment yourself we all have a great car. Looks great, handles fantastic and is freaky fast.

Speaking of 'Top Gear' and the Nurburgring, I found this amusing anecdote with regard to the Carrerra GT. As many have heard, the car did a 7:32 around the ring which is considered impressive to cognoscenti...however...

"Why? Is there something wrong with the Carrera's handling? It should be fine. The low crank means a low centre of gravity. And it's not exactly offset by the fiddly, two-part, removable roof panels which weigh just 3lb apiece. It's mid engined, the 335/30 rear tyres are good and Porsche says it's been round the N?rburgring with Walter R?hrl at the helm in 7.32. That's blisteringly fast. Or rather it would be if it were true. In a moment of candour, Walter admitted he'd never actually done it, he just guessed at how long it may have taken. "

we should't forget that the boxster probably saved porsche from disapearing or sold to a bigger car maker ! then we might have no more 911 and have bin parts from GM or ford in our cars!

That was an interesting segment (and a ridiculously long download). I still think that is the greatest show on TV! I thought there were some interesting points about the Cayman -stuff I hadn't really thought about. I'm still a huge fan of that car though though.

I also saw that episode Perfectlap was refering to, where the Boxster (986 -booyah!) was named the best purists sports car! I remeber thinking throughout that whole segment "where the heck is the Boxster on that list?!?" Then I guess they saved the best for last.
