Hand Brake Pull Noise
 

First pull of the Emergency brake, while moving, produces a loud mechanical sound from the cables engaging. So the sound is local to under the glove box and rear wheels. It only happens that first pull of the drive. For the rest of the drive the hand brake works as expected. I'm thinking some type of self adjusting taking place. I don't typically set the Handbrake if parked on level ground. Especially in the winter or if rotors get wet. I do like to drag the rear brakes to clean the disks at the beginning of my drive. Anyone have thoughts on this noise. I don't think there is anything wrong just would like the comfort of knowing what is taking place.

there are no e brake parts under the glove box . brake lever , cables to the rear wheels and that is about it . might need adjustment or new shoes .

Sorry let me clarify, center console storage box, not glove box (No glove box on 2002). I believe this where the cable adjust is located

There is no self-adjuster. More likely something is loose. Start with an inspection of the pertinent components and adjust your emergency brake. See this tutorial:

If you have a Bentley's, it will also walk you throught the adjustment of the parking brakes and cables. I'm no pro but it helped me out when I was tearing apart the rear for a bearing change.

i think that's normal.

a few years ago, i posted a message that i accidentally pulled up on the e-brake while in motion and heard a horrendously loud "CLUNK" that was coming from the center console-armrest (and i could feel the vibration in the e-brake handle).

ChrisZang posted that i was completely normal (or that at least it happens to him as well)

so that makes 3. i'd believe it's a normal noise / sound.

You have to understand that the Boxster has six brake pads. Four that actually do something and two that are the ebrake. The ebrake is nothing more than a small drum brake designed to hold the car in place when parked. If you are expecting to preform some fantastic maneuver using the ebrake like a "Rockford" you will be sadly surprised by what does not happen.

No nothing of the sort. I didn't think I gave that impression. The fact it is a separate drum system is enlightening. I do thing the ebrake should be exercised during a drive to keep the parts free and the contact surfaces clean. I do see from a diagram that typical of most drum systems there is an adjuster. I'm guessing that Backing up and using the handbrake is what makes the adjustment. Good info. I have a lot to learn and I do like to know what makes things tick
