Shift Knob Compatibility ?

I asked my mechanic if he had any shift knobs that he had taken off any other boxsters or 911's. He has one off a 996 that he will sell me for $50.00. It is the newer style with the alluminum insert.

Does anyone know if a porsche shift knob and boot combo from a 996 will fit in my 97 boxster. The part # is 996 552 655 01.

I know it is a 6 speed knob....any my car is a 5 speed. Other than the shift pattern, will it fit and function properly. (assuming I dont shift for that mystery 6th gear)

Thanks for the advice. I hope this works because it could be a great deal for me.

I think it should work fine for you. And btw, the "silver insert" is just some silver paint on black plastic. I scraped off all the silver paint with my fingernail in front of the TV one night since some of it had come off already, then I installed it. Took 30 seconds to install, btw.

The 6 speed diagram will cause everyone in the know to think you have an S! Just make sure your friends driving the car and any valet knows the shift pattern is different (not that you'd let a valet drive your car... but worth saying anyway).

Lots of interior parts for 996's and 986's are interchangeable. Center consoles, climate control units, steering wheels (a 3 spoke should be your next upgrade), etc.
