You're "stuck" with a 3.4 roadster that sets the bar in its class? LOL.
Dude just wait until your kid is old enough to ride in it. My plan back when I first bought my Boxster S was to keep it for about 3 years. I'd decided against getting a Carrera after driving the Boxster S. The fact that I saved $10-$15k by skipping the Porsche with the engine in the wrong place just made it a no brainer.... Then a few years into it all a guards red 996 C4S came along. I was about to pull the trigger. But I couldn't do it. The C4S was going to be my winter car. But at the time I was getting along fine with Boxster during winter. I decided to scrap the C4S. And man what a good move that was. The economy tanked within a year and half and that C4S lost so much value that I would have been severely underwater on a car!!!! not a house but a car... Now the 911's are cheap. You can get into a 997 for as little as $34K. So you can imagine what the 996's will be going for soon. Yet do I have even a remote desire to get into one? Not really. However if I were looking for a third car to sit around like yours, I'd get a old air-cooled Carrera. At least it won't bleed value from every corner as it sits there. Honestly, if I were to sell my car, and I'm sure the same is true of yours, you could not possibly get something as good for the money. You'd have to kick in more cash and who needs to do that for a marginally better experience. If that. p.s. I hear that that Porsche is going PDK only on all their performance oriented Carreras. They're starting with the GT3 (and no more race engine to boot). PDK out of warranty will be as exciting as a donkey kick to the groin. Meanwhile the value of all the non-GT1 engine Carreras (most of them) will be crashing because the 991 is so overpriced: The 991 is already seeing hits of as much as 20% with barely 12 months of ownership. Porsche screwed all their existing customers by pricing the new stuff so out of wack. If the 991's were in hot demand it might have worked out. But the only Carreras that the market seems to be willing to pay up for are the GT's. Probably more so now that a manual shifter is on the endangered species list. I'm even seeing '07-'09 997 Turbos that stickered for $150K going for under $80K, and those are the good ones with the race engine, the newer Turbos only get the street engine. Point is wait long enough and you can get a Carrera, or any non-track orientedd Porsche, for a steal. Until then enjoy your bar-setter when you can. |

For me, if it were between selling a Boxster and having no fun car and no possibility of getting another fun car or keeping the Boxster, there would be no question (if you don't need the money or garage space). I have a little kid too and I know how hard it is to get time to hop into the fun car and go for a drive, but the opportunities do come up, and if I didn't have a fun car to take advantage, I'd be sad.
However, if this were an opportunity to explore the other sports car options, my answer is different. As great as the Boxster is, there are other fish in the sea. There are sports cars out there that offer a very different and in some ways better driving experience. Sometimes it's good to experience what else is out there and broaden the sports car experience. |
Is it paid off? I honestly think you should make driving it a priority, instead of selling it. Drive it to work on nice days. I think too many people get into the "I'm a parent now, sell all your toys and be responsible" trap. Most who do that will never get their toys again, and have regrets ever after.

Ckrikos - YES I STILL HAVE THE BUMPER, Come get it!!!!
To many of you - All Carrera's suck! Period. Cayman PDK turbo would be fun. That's about it for P-cars for me. It has been paid off since I bought it and we have other vehicles to drive the family around. It is not taking up any space. I Don't really have time to drive it unless I am going to a meeting. I am home for the most part of the week as I am Mr. Mom. I will have her for now and catch up on some maintenance. (clutch, flywheel, water pump, oil etc.) As for a price?????? I would love to get 25k for it but the reality is someone will probably offer around 15k and that is just no reason to let it go. Thanks for all the replies. http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...S/_D3S3388.jpg http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...S/_D3S3393.jpg |

I have to chuckle at some of the threads of late, quite the persecution complex for some Boxster owners. Can't we all just get along............ Jaay, I don't know if you wanted people to talk you out of selling, into selling, or what. What I do know is if you do indeed sell and the wife won't let you  get another fun car, there's likely gonna be a heckuva tide of resentment building in a few months. |

JAAY: Fantastic pics, THAT is a great day. |
JAAY: In the past - and maybe future again - I was really in to the motorcycle ride. Three times I gave up my ride for the family/wife. I was fortunate enough to have a wife that understood I needed by recreational time and for me that meant a good ride with the tunes blaring away in my helmet (note: this did not mean I couldn't hear the road or pay attention to my surroundings). Each time I gave it up it was a tough decision, but family needs were always, and always will be, more important. The reason I have the Boxster today is because my wife still knows I need something besides work and family. I need some time alone enjoying the ride. :)
If you decide to give it up, do so with the understanding with your wife that someday - when the need really hits you - you will be getting another ride. Be it with two wheels, four wheels, or wings instead of wheels (I'd really like to fly!) so she'll be there to support your choice & needs. Just as you do with hers. |
My wife is not holding be back but keeping me grounded. She is my voice of reason and fully supports good judgement calls. Her dedication to keeping me in check is to my benefit. We actually just closed on a second home today down south in fl fully paid off! Within two years we will have no mortgage and maybe then I will buy another car of my choice to help feed my need for performance.

All that being said, and after reading many of the Carrera forums for years, particluarly the water-cooled 996/997 folks, I find that a superiority complex takes a hold of many of them. Doesn't matter if its a 944, 928, Boxster, Cayman many have an attitude that these other Porsches aren't simply different but actually lesser Porsches. Many of these snooty types also strike me as the type who have never once tracked or autocrossed their 911 which makes the whiff of superiority from this sort of person all the more amusing. It's like "okay you drive the street engine version of an endurance racer but you haven't anymore driving skill than the average sedan driver? And you're an expert on how non-Carreras are lesser Porsches? Oh - kay...". To be fair these types don't seem to be a majority... but aren't nearly as small as I first imagined either. Even amongst the folks who do track and autocross their Carreras I still get these silly comments here and there. Meanwhile when I would run with the SCCA non-Porsche clubs its a totally different attitude. I'ts like they actually know more about the differences in midengine and rear engine handling in Boxsters/Caymans and Carreras than the actual people driving Porsches. It tell my friend its sort of like the wine and cheese crowd (for the most part) vs. the guys who actually race whatever they can get their hands on and don't have a ton of cash to blow on toys. The lap times reflect this as well...Around here you might go to a Porsche club event and see 1.00 - 2.00 second gap amongst the top 7 drivers while at an SCCA or regional club you might see the first 7 drivers separated by less than 0.6's in completely different cars. It's almost as if the better and more informed drivers are the ones with the smaller budgets. |

An Addendum.......I came back to edit / ad this to my above one sentence response so as to not generate too much ire, that was not my intent. I owned a 2002 Boxster S for several years, great car, loved it. I wanted to move up / on / laterally / whatever you want to perceive it as to an air cooled 911 since they were holding if not gaining value vs. dropping as the Boxsters were. Since making the switch about a year and a half back I frequent the 911 boards much more so than this one for obvious reasons. In that time I frankly have never witnessed postings or conversations untowards Boxsters in any way, I've honestly never seen the topic addressed in the two years I've spent on those forums (granted I'm mainly on the 993 section). If anything, it's pretty amusing to observe the air cooled guys crack on the 996 water cooled cars as less than worthy of the monicker, I guess there has to be a perceived hierarchy everywhere huh lol? I recently came back to see what's been going on here and the number of posts regarding the general idea was surprising. My 2 cents. |
Well that's interesting because I never get, hear or read Boxster/Cayman cracks from the 993/964/etc. guys.
It's almost always first time Porsche owners in the water-cooled Carreras. Now contrast this with othe brands, for instance look at M3 and Z4 owners, I don't really see any of this sort of thing. But I guess BMW didn't ever set out to market a roadster as 'entry level', they just gave folks a big engine in their roadster if they wanted that option. Porsche decided to go out of their way and create this faux stepping stone marketing spin. I guess that's one way to get a repeat customer to spend more the second time around. However, I've seen PLENTY of air-cooled Carrera cracks on the water-cooled so they aren't all angels either. Which leads me to the conclusion that as soon as you get into any Porsche, someone else is looking down on you and ironically it's another Porsche owner. The average non-Porsche driver who compliments a Porsche never distinguishes in any specific way other than to say "nice Porsche". |

This place has gotten downright Goofy............ Adios and Vaya Con Dios.......... |
The idea that an enthusiast doesn't care what others have to say about their favorite car is true with this many folks: 0
and elevating it to being "offended" sounds a little goofy to me. It's more amusing than being akin to someone calling your girlfriend a pig or saying your kid is ugly. Now that would be offensive! |
