Texas resident here, and yes there is a mistake in the law covering current plate regulations. You are still required to have one, but during a rewrite in June of 2011 they left out the punishment\fine portion. It's a punishable offense - but with no stated punishment. I suspect that will be remedied as soon as possible. The dealer didn't put a front plate on my car, so I certainly haven't bothered. Not sure what I'll do when the state corrects their mistake.

No plate, but it has the stupid holes from where the dealer put one on. Fortunately in Florida they don't require a front plate. In fact when you register the car they only give you one!

i haven't run front plates on anything for 30 years. i've gotten maybe 3 tickets in that time. i just pay them and move on.
the last time i got one, a local bike cop pulled stopped me: Cop "you don't have a front plate on your car" Me "you are correct" C "why isn't it there?" M "because i don't want it there" C "you realize state law says you have to have one?" M "of course i do, but i'm not putting it on" C "excuse me?" M "i'm not putting one on" C "i can write you a ticket for that" M "go right ahead" got the ticket, drove 3 blocks to the courthouse, checked the box that says "yes i did commit this infraction", paid the $80 and moved on. 3 months later the same cop pulled me over again: C "didn't i already give you a ticket for no front plate?" M "yes you did" C "and?" M "i paid it" C "what do you mean you paid it?" M "i checked the box admitting my crime and paid the $80" C "but you didn't put the plate on?" M "correct" C "what if i give you another ticket?" M "go ahead, i'll go pay that one too, but i'm still not putting the plate on" he looked at me for a minute, threw my license back at me and rode off. f' them. |

Front License Plate
I bought an early 911 that came with a cut down front license plate. The previous owner simply cut off the top and bottom leaving only the numbers. I don't know if he ever ran the car with the modified plate and I kept it when I sold the car. I thought it was a cool way to clean up the front end...but I don't know how legal it would be.

Wow Dave, you must have police that are either nice, or lazy. If I told a cop that, he would make a point of ticketing me every time he saw me.

Whenever I drive through a big city here in NJ or even Manhattan (tunnel cops) they barely bat an eye. Actually I haven't had my car inspected in nearly 3 years. :o I don't feel like getting failed for mildly tinted windows, to then pay $100 to have them reinstalled.... and I can't find the front plate to at least fake it for the inspection. |
Yeah, small town. Even the local State Police have an attitude like: "respect my authority! " , to quote Erik Cartman.
|
Can someone explain to us poor NC folk who don't have to have one what it accomplishes...has any crime ever been solved because a get away car had a front plate?
|
VA Congress had a bill this year to get rid of the front tag...killed in committee or some such crap. Anyway, I've got a Rennline tow hook, and I jimmied a tag mount to fit that. The tag's been pretty beaten up by autocross cones.

No front plate on either car. Been pulled over 3 times for no front plate. Once in the Boxster, twice in the 993 Turbo. All State police. Every time I was given a warning ticket. Cops were very nice to me. One cop even said he "could not 'see' me on radar without a plate" because he "could not lock onto to me with his radar gun" he said the radar "just bounces off the slope of the hood". I don't know if this is true, but it works for me.:)
I did get a parking ticket from the city of Chicago ($65) for no front plate while parked at Peet's Coffee at North and Sheffield. That sucked. |

Bought the Rennline tow hook mount ($149) the next day. Not too happy.:( |
Illeagle in the UK to run without one.
Also has to be an standard size, font, level of reflectives etc etc. If you break the law the very best outcome is a spot fine. The worst is 3 points on your license and a fine. The law is the law. |

better than getting tagged speeding + points/insurance surcharge. Way more than $120. |
Full frontal nudity, legally, here in TN.
