Just Finished Doing a Garage Door / Gate Remote Mod

I searched the web and found a lot of posting on this. One of the best was on the Rennlist 996 forum. The switch used is a 996 Targa Shade Switch, Part No. 996 613 119 10 A05.

On 986 Boxsters these switches will only fit in the bat wing with cut outs (Part No. 996 552 335 02 01C), or the console if you don't have heated seats. I had two blanks on the left side of the radio but unlike the 996 switches, the 986 are slanted and side specific.

I had to flip the one on the right so it would fit properly. It appears the bump on the switch has to be on the outside for them to seat properly. This makes sense as all of the other switches are set up this way.

I lost the "Boxster S" script that was on the OEM bat wing and will work on a suitable substitute.

Here is a link to the Rennlist posting I used. Skip some of the posting as there are some typical internet bantering.

Nice work. I think that mod solves what is basically a design flaw in the 986. My nephew bought a Hyundai Elantra two weeks ago for $17,500 and he had a garage door opener integrated in the dash. You would think that Porsche would have included that on a car that sold for $50,000 (or more) when new.

I used this method that I saw on Renntech: http://www.renntech.org/forums/tutorials/article/153-yet-another-way-to-add-a-homelink-device/ You will need to register on Renntech to read the link.

This is similar to what you did, but used a Homelink transmitter from a GM vehicle. The nice thing feature of this mod is that you can control two devices from one switch fitted on the left side of the dash.

This looks great! I ended up using another "key" switch, like the door locks, and putting that in a blank slot on the left. I didn't even realize there was a batwing available with blank slots. Does anyone know what car used that part, and what the switches were for?

The 996 has their heated seats switches there.

On the later Boxsters, the switches were flat and not slanted.

On the 987s, a Homelink-compatible opener was standard. Then again, newer cars now have more base-tech than older, more expensive cars did. Nature of the game.

Good deal. In that case you could put them up high and fill in the two dead switch spots. I also believe that in 2002 they went to matte finish over gloss. The Targa switches I used are matte. Because they are so far away from the gloss switches it is not an issue.

I'm collecting the parts to do this in my Boxster. Picked up a matte black defroster switch on ebay for $12. This guys mod clicker gave me a better idea on how to wire up the led status light. I plan to use a 2-pole reed switch to activate the remote and the defroster switch led separately (rather than his transistor circuit triggered by the remote led). Power will be from the remote 12V battery to keep it self contained. I'll post some pics when the project is complete.

Project completed. See my DIY post here : http://986forum.com/forums/diy-project-guides/45508-yet-another-garage-door-opener-install-post341122.html#post341122

Does anyone know what year 996 changed to matte buttons?

Great minds think alike.

Since I was installing the PSE switch anyway last week, I also put in the sun shade switch for a garage door button later on.

This is what I'm looking to do for my 986. Where did you get the switch below the garage opener?

Thats the sport exhaust switch, the one above it for the garage door is the Targa sun shade switch. Both are stock parts you can get from the dealer or other vendors, I got mine from Carnewal in Belgium.

Both Boxsters and 996s went to matte finish buttons in 2002.
