Carrera vs Carrara

I just noticed that the car is spelled C A R R E R A but the color choice is spelled
C A R R A R A White. What am I missing here? What does this mean?

Carrara is a city in the Massa Carrara province of Tuscany, Italy, famous for the white or blue-gray marble quarried there. It is on the Lavensa river, some 60 miles west northwest of Florence.

Porsche uses the Carrera name on its top models to honor the company's success in the Carrera Panamericana race.

SD987, thanks! Are they pronounced the same?

SD987 10-06-2005 01:10 PM

I don't think so:

I believe carrara is pronounced kar ra ra ("kar" meaning stone) and carrera is usually pronounced ka rehr a. Incidentally, on its own, I don't believe that carrera is a proper "word".

Can't help it married to a teacher!

Pronunciation of Italian and Spanish are very similar. Both languages are romance languages and phonetic. Carrara Ka RRa(hard roling r) -ra & Carrera Ka RRe(hard rolling R) -ra. The initial C followed a, o & u you pronounce like a english K. The meaning of Carrera is " a race" nothing to do ethinicity but a competition meet.

Now if we can get all our friends to pronounce the car's name properly (porsh-ah) we'll be right as rain. I still feel compelled to correct my wife from time to time.

Adam 10-12-2005 08:55 PM

My father says "Porsha" sounds snobby lol. Ever heard of this?

I say "PORSH-uh" but I don't correct people if they anglicize the pronunciation.

Any more than I would expect an English speaker to say "folks-vahgen".

SD987 10-12-2005 11:23 PM

From what I understand, even the "correct" anglicized pronounciation sounds "off" to a German.

German Brand Names

aglsteven 10-13-2005 12:29 AM

As a native german speaker .....

The correct pronunciation is Porsch - e ,with a short 'e' at the end, not an uh.

incidently, a bit of useless trivia, my uncle went to school with two of Ferry Porsche's sons, in Stuttgart. Well, that was part of the justification I used to my wife ........... :D

I heard the show "friends" had a episode on the pronounciation of Porsche. I wonder why 99% of Americans say it incorrectly?

bmussatti 07-19-2006 01:45 PM

I am bumping this old thread back up because a very helpful forum member PM'ed me with the suggestion that I had miss-spelled the color of my car in my signature.

As terrible of a speller that I am...I actually got it right! :) Thanks again "Big Bear"! :D

SD987 07-19-2006 02:08 PM

I am re-bumping this thread because Carrara White boxsters rule....

The "Big Bear" thing really made me laugh. When I was signing up for the 986 forum, Grizzly was sitting next to me, begging for some General Tso's Chicken. The rest, as they say, is history.

The attached is a photo of the actual Grizzly. Please do not view if you are squeamish, in the presence of small children, or fearful of wild animals.
