Humming noise from rear axle
 

Hi all,

I have noticed a "humming" noise coming from the rear axle that only becomes evident above 40-50mph. I only recently noticed it and it has quickly become louder I believe. Tires appear to be in good condition and otherwise it drives ok. Any suggestions what it could be?

I'm having the same issue, which I thought originally was a bad tire. I was having the humming, and a vibration. I had several issues going on:

-The Ties holding the Parking Brake cable came loose
-The inner fender liner came loose and chunked my passenger rear

These were alleviated mostly by getting new rears, now I have the humming left.
After discussion with a Porsche Mechanic he asked if its your Passenger rear, does the sound get louder with hard left turns? (Yes it does) Does it get quieter with right turns (yes it does). Likely the Wheel bearing, which I ordered from Pelican and am looking to change out as my Thanksgiving Project at home. I'm no mechanic but I'm thinking the diagnosis is spot on.

I gave mine a 5 but I couldn't dance to it. New bearings, and CV joints took care of it. Hope yours is less intensive.

Had the same on my 04 S and a new bearing fixed it. the change in sound when turning at speed is the indicator. About $600 if the dealer does it. $50 for the bearing to do it yourself, bit you need a $300 bearing tool. Still a savings to do it yourself and you will learn a lot of good info about your car in the process. Only takes about 3 hours if you have a lift or about 4hours on jackstands.
