Disappointed with Pelican Parts

Noob here guys,

I just picked up a 986 that needs work a few weeks ago. I want to use the sponsors and vendors respected on this forum so I ordered my first round of parts for the car from Pelican Parts. I have to say I am disappointing so far. I placed my orders online and later got emails requesting copies of my drivers licence and credit card. This was a bit of a red flag but they said I could delete the personal info. Knowing the folks here use PP often I deleted the info and sent it on. Then I get another response email from Denise Savage the Customer Service Manager requesting some of the detail that I blacked out. I am just not comfortable with digital images of my info floating around so now I am torn.

Overall just to get parts shipped out I have spent more time than it took me to get the engine mount out. Is Pelican parts normally difficult to deal with? Is there another vendor that is a little more streamlined in there distribution?

are you located outside of the US?

I've ordered from Pelican Parts and other vendors. All my transactions have been smooth as silk. No vendor has ever asked for copies of my credential. I'd suggest calling Denise and asking her why the copies were needed in the first place. Perhaps, Pelican had a valid reason. Depending on her answer, you can decide if you want to do business with them in the future.

I noticed you have no info listed about yourself here on the forum. Personally I would be leary of someone like you. Skammers are everywhere.:troll:

The guys at Pelican have been great and always got my parts I've ordered. If its the first time you ordered from them thats what they require if they havent dealt with you (If you're paying by credit card). Once i had my account setup, I've never been asked for more info and always had good luck.

Pelican typically has the best online parts service of anyone on the net. I suspect this is a very specific issue related to you and only you. Send em an email and ask em "what's up?" or just shop elsewhere. Lots of choices but few as consistently excellent as Pelican.

Eric G 11-13-2012 10:23 AM

I have spent close to 10K with Pelican and have had ZERO and I repeat ZERO issues with them. The process they are using is commonly used by vendors, and for that fact, my credit card company stated that this is a practice they ask of some vendors to verify that the buyer is really the holder of the card.

If you are uneasy about sharing your personal issues on a forum, online ordering may not be in the books for you. Also, Wayne of Pelican is the owner of this website so if you have concerns you might want to take them up with him directly. He is easy to approach and open to discussions.

I've had nothing but great service from PP. Buy all of my parts from them; Porsche, BMW, and Mini.

With that being said, scammers are everywhere and businesses have to do more to protect themselves even if its a PITA for the rest of us "regular customers". Three weeks ago someone convinced Bank of America that they were me and redeemed $1,100 worth of credit card points. You'd think that BofA would only redeem points/cash to a BofA account, but they went ahead and sent the person a check! No worry, they replaced the points and all is well but online transcactions are still somewhat risky.

hopefully this is just a trust no one gauntlet on the first order. I can't imagine having the car ripped apart, realizing I need one more part and then trying to jump through these hoops without losing it. The Stealership prices might start to look tempting.

i'm from outside the us of a and didn't have to give anything other than a credit card number and, i think, a 'verified by visa' password.

pelican is great, and i buy from them as well as use their tech section ad nauseum. they are not always the cheapest, however. a quick visit to the online parts diagrams at auto atlanta will show that the dealer can sometimes have lower prices. anything i need i check pelican first then compare to auto atlanta online. if auto atlanta is cheaper then i order from suncoast, as they are always less expensive than auto atlanta but don't have the nice online parts interface.

and who wants to bet someone tries to call me out for not having vendor loyalty or somesuch given the above statement?

I have had good service from Pelican Parts. When there has been a problem they have always taken care of it. After several thousand dollars of purchases I would say I am a satisfied customer.

dan.oneufer 11-13-2012 03:24 PM

I have had outstanding results with Pelican, although I don't recall having to provide that information at my first order. They process orders quickly, are available to talk with on the phone, and have fair prices.

Thanks for the info. Do you have a link for auto atlanta online?

**UPDATE**

I just got a confirmation email that some of my parts have shipped so I guess that is a good sign.

golonaus 11-13-2012 03:33 PM

Always great service and lowest prices online

wawa 11-13-2012 06:23 PM

I too had great service and no problem at all with pelican parts and payment and I'm from out of USA.

The only complaint I could do is shipping is slow.

Used them for 10+ years with no problems. Like their jelly beans.

stateofidleness 11-13-2012 06:31 PM

Always had perfect service for Pelican! Very trusted seller for me for both Boxster and 914.

I never got to eat my jelly beans...seems that the moment I found them my wife said "MINE"!!! I can only assume they were good as all 4 containers were stolen from me!

Tim01S 11-13-2012 06:42 PM

Nothing but great experiences with PP. They are always the first place I look. Always disappointed when they don't carry something I need and I go looking elsewhere.

Mark_T 11-14-2012 09:50 AM

Pelican is great for pricing on oem and aftermaket parts. Shipping could be quicker.

If it is an actual Porsche part I need then I find that it is cheaper and faster to buy from my local dealership.

Jelly beans? What jelly beans?

What does that mean?

thom4782 11-14-2012 09:54 AM

Did you ever call Pelican and ask them what happend? In fairness, it would be nice to hear their side of the story.

0bserver 11-14-2012 02:41 PM

I'm still getting the run around. They told me they are trying to prevent fraud but they processed and shipped my small orders and cancelled the larger orders. Now I'm just confused

Always wears pretty thin when a total newbie comes here and starts gouging away at a well respected vendor with some weak ass story in his first few posts. No cred.

Thanks I sent him an email yesterday but I'll try PM too

0bserver 11-15-2012 11:39 AM

No response from Wayne or anybody from pelican. I called my dealership, to my surprise they were cheaper on most items and have the parts in stock so no waiting. They took my order over the phone and emailed me a credit card authorization to sign and processed my order no problem. Thanks to those who tried to help.

If you are really interested in resolving this question, just call the following number and ask to speak to Wayne. 1-888-280-7799.

If you read the OP's last post, he did resolve the problem, albeit, in a different way!
