Hey speaking of those Christmas tree air freshners... last summer I was helping a buddy move some stuff in his garage and under one of the boxes was one of those green smelly trees... long story short, when i went to pick it up it was stuck to the concrete... a few days later we power washed the floor and the little air freshner came off only to leave a perfect outline in the cement. I realize its only a airfreshner but WTF is in that stuff to eat cement? Nasty stuff whatever it is!!!

That airbox was a treat. Everytime someone new drove it we would have to have the discussion about the little red throttle lever next to the e-brake. Many a airbox "popped". |
Yes the famous Enrichment lever as well as the heat control/Defrost lever next to the E-Brake... Most people wouldnd even know where to find the little red level at their first 911T starting experience. I love the yellow 911 color, but this one is silver with the brushed stainless targa arch... look pretty good too :) I'll get some pics of the car itself up in the spring once the engine goes back in :)

I hadn't updated in a while... Got the engine bay prepped and ready to go, put the new firewall matting in place and pushed the rebuilt motor back in.
:) This weekend its brakes, and clean up the front trunk.... and hopefully take it for its first ride with the new motor :D http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1367631354.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1367631375.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1367631395.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1367631413.jpg |
That looks really sweet.
If I may ask (I have searched, but want a personal opinion) how's the ride on the air cooled vs. water cooled 911s? Performance? Maintenance? I have a change to buy either - got the wife's OK for me to have two P-Cars - so I've been looking and researching. I have found that everyone that owns a P-Car likes it. Regardless of model, So, it is tough trying to figure out what model I want. Truthfully, I like the body style of the 964 the best as the 996 is almost just like my Boxster, but I do like my creature comforts too. And out in the desert, an A/C that doesn't work well and is unreliable is a deal breaker. So, is ove heating. It can hit 110~130 on a bad summer day. I've also looked around at some of the 70's - 80's models, but am not sure that is a good idea as I'm concerned about the maintenance. |
The 964 is a sweet car... Given the option of the two 996 vs 964 it would be a total personal preference of what you like... they both look great and as long as you keep up the maintenance you should be fine with both (even in hot weather - although the liquid cooled engine is a peace of mind in the heat)... having said that the downside is that you have to maintain coolant system (fluids, hoses, pump etc).
From a driving perspective the two are totally different... the 996 (as you said) is more like your boxster.... more refined, the 964 to me gives you a very connected feeling even though its not as refined as the 996. The classic look of the 964 vs the newer 996 look - all in what you prefer... Have a look at this youtube video.... :-) Porsche 964 vs 996 - Total 911 - YouTube |
The car is looking great! Very jealous of your work! I wish I had the time and talent to do that!

beautiful work Hieko. I've restored a few non-Porsche vehicules- with my 2 hands. Built not bought! You've really got something valuable in every sense of the word- congrats
no more need for a ride-along mechanic... |
Thanks Guys... Finished up the brakes today, new everything flushed all the brake fluid and went for a ride... I had perma-grin leaving the shop today as the 2.7 Air cooled purred like a kitten in the rear... This old Targa runs beautiful! Had one minor problem the tach wasn't working... forgot to plug a cable in :D Took the Targa top out and went for a second ride then got home parked it! Now for the inside cleanup and then we'll be done :)

Changed the old plastic fuel return splitter to a brass one (this one wont break) :) http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1367890453.jpg Got the exhaust headers with the heat exchangers blasted and covered with a coat of zinc paint; (you can take a torch and heat it up and it wont change color) http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1367890475.jpg And a couple of the new coated rotors and the calipers... http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1367890663.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1367890681.jpg |
