What are the best speakers??

Hi,

I am taking my car in tomorrow to get the speakers upgraded at a local auto shop. My car is totally standard and I really want to keep it that way (no door speakers). I don't want to change the head unit so this just leaves me with the dash speakers. Can anyone give me some advice on what is the best speaker to upgrade with? I fully know the sound will not be great but it has to be better than what I have now.

Any suggestions would be good, has anyone upgraded and have recommendations.

Thanks all.....

This is a loaded question. I used to compete in automotive stereo competitions about ten years ago. The very high end equipment back then was MB quartz and Memphis. In our cars I honestly believe anything over a few hundred bucks total is a waste because of the amount of interference from outside noise – even with the top up. You simply will not be able to appreciate the high quality sound from a high end system. Go to the shop and listen to what they have on display.

Everybody's ears are different. Buy what sounds good to you. Stick with name brands. You could check in Consumer Reports for build quality.

I remember from a long time ago you want heavy magnets.

MB Quart are excellent along with Boston Acoustics. Bring music you know well to an audition and trust your ears.

As Jesse notes, too much background noise in a Boxster for serious critical listening so when I really want to hear the details I use these:

Speakers are only as good as the system that powers them. However, you will want something "low-profile" for the size of dash opening. You may even want to keep the tweets! The trim ring can be tricky, but there is a good DIY on it.

I got 3-way JVCs at 150 watts and they are plenty powerful. However, my HU and amp DO make the difference.

As one member suggested, buy an exhaust and you will not listen to the stereo! Besides, if you don't have subs or bass, how much can you listen to it?

I'm not looking for anything great, just not total crap which is what I have now. Due to the power outages in this part of the world a mobile guy is coming over today to upgrade my system. Will keep you posted.
