manual gas door release

My manual gas door release cable has become disconnected. Anyone know if you can access that without removing the fender? I can't tell from the parts breakdown just how the cable is attached and from underneith There is too much in the way to be able to see anything.

Did you look in the passanger's side door jamb area up near the hinges? There might be a release cable in there. I think I have one in the 987.

I have the release cable there, but it is not hooked up to the gas door end and I can't get to it to rehook it.

Ok i took a picture (sorry it sucks)
Get yourself a wire coat hanger and bend the end like in the other picture
below (make sure you leave the hanger long enough...
Then just reach through and use the V on the flange right up where the plastic pull chord is normally wrapped around the shaft and pull it back.

By the way the text on the pic below reads
top - ring that goes around shaft to manually pull back (this is probably snapped)
middle - plastic pull cord that goes back into door hinge area
bottom - this is the actuator arm which angles downwards just a little further back behing this text - and the actuator itself is directly below

Holy cow you have a release? The 98's still have the honor system of a door you push open so you hope everyone around you is honest enough to leave it alone.

Wow, thanks, that is exactly what I needed to know and could not see. I have stripped the fender liner out, but still cannot get to the mechanism for all the other stuff around it. Kinda looks like the fender may have to come off to get to it.

There is a little plastic cover plate in the door well near the top which restricts the visibility into that little chamber... I would try taking that cover plate off first... I can take a look at the shop book when i get home late tonight though... I'm sure they explain how to do it

Well looks like the process isnt well explained...
BUT you have to:
-remove the front right wheel
-remove the wheel well liner
-remove the EVAP canister
-and the actuator is sitting tucked away in the back held in by two T20 screws

Thanks H, I have gotten down to the cannister and am ready to remove it and hopefully will be able to get to it then. I appreciate your help If you ever find yourself in the mountains of north carolina, we always have a spare bedroom and the best porsche roads anywhere. bob

Hey guys, Thanks to the diagrams and info everyone shared with me, I have found that it is relatively easy to change a broken manual gas door release without any dissasembly at all. Don't have any pics, buy all that is required is a 2 foot piece of stiff wire. If anyone needs step by step info feel free to call me anytime. thanks again bob 828 385 3100

Thanks Bob, been on those wonderful NC roads many of times on the Harley in the past but hoping to get down there next summer maybe Weather is still nice up here now but leaves are falling and temps are coming down (I hate winter)... its always a loooong wait til spring comes.

Oh yeah. We have vacation rental cabins just off the blue ridge parkway an hour north of asheville and we stay filled with motorcycle riders or sports car drivers. Just finished a 3 day drive with the raleigh, nc PCA that the wife and I laid out for them. We have 2 boxsters and a C4 and put around 10K on each one of them in a year.
