Boxsters built at VW

First Boxster built at Volkswagen Osnabrück Rolls offthe line - Teamspeed.com

Stuttgart must be busy if some of the new Boxsters are being built over at the VW plant in Osnabrück. I was doing some other reading and apparently some people are upset over this, but obviously they forget that for years the Boxster and Cayman was cranked out over at Uusikaupunki, Finland. In my opinion is still has to meet the same guidelines... anyhow, just thought it was interesting reading to share.

Here is the Uusikaupunki, Finland production numbers...

1997 1,913 Boxster
1998 10,469 Boxster
1999 14,934 Boxster
2000 19,462 Boxster (My BoxS is one of these)
2001 23,414 Boxster
2002 20,196 Boxster
2003 12,998 Boxster
2004 10,050 Boxster
2005 21,233: Boxster 16,368 and Cayman 4,865
2006 32,393: Boxster 13,254 and Cayman 19,139
2007 from Jan 1 to Jun 30, 13,236: Boxster 6,570 and Cayman 6,666

You can check where yours was made....

My serial number came up as 5024 so i'm wondering if thats 5024 out of 19462... Yup IMS is good still and RMS is good and dry (40,000 miles on the clock now)

Also folks forget that the 924 and 944 were built by Audi in Neckarsulm. Also said ex-Karmann factory in Osnabruck previously built the 356, 911, 912, 914, and 968. Not exactly surprising here.

But since VW had a hand in it, must mean the electrics will go wonky.

Both my Boxster and my Saab Viggen were built by Valmet in Finland.
No complaints...

Kewl! Mine is the #1293 2000 'S'.

New survey everyone! Have any Finland cars had an IMS failure . Took mine out at 55k miles and it was like new. Oil was changed every 15k and sat for years at times without being driven.

Ok just kidding about the survey.

I once owned a fine piece of machinery from Valmet in Finland.

Miy 2000 Base was also produced at the Valmet plant in Finland. As I recall, a 2000 or 2001 Porsche Excellence test of the base Boxster was written by an owner of an earlier one (a 1998?) that had been assembled in Germany. The reviewer commented favourably on the assembly quatlity of the Finnish car, noting a reduction in rattles, etc. Indeed, if I am not mistaken, he went on to indicate that he had been hearing from various owners that the Valmet-produced cars typically had better quality control than the ones from Germany.

As has already been mentioned, from the beginning Porsche has a history of assembling cars in outside facilities. I see no reason to believe that a Porsche assembled at a plant owned by Volkswagen would be any worse than one owned by Valmet in Finland. Training, increased inspection and rigid quality-control standards are the key no matter where a product is assembled; indeed, on occasion, more care will be taken on the start-up of production at a new facility than at an existing one, where there can be a tendancy for complacency (or at least, a tendancy to reduce the number of quality-control inspectors as the workers become familiar with the product and assembly process). And lets face it - its not as if the assembly has been transferred to the third world!

My 02 S was built in Finland also. Thanks for the link. It is kind of cool to see where our babies came from. My 02 only just passed 11,700 miles. I put 3000 on in the three months I have owned it. Previous owner only drove it 8700 in 10 years. Here is a question for another day, 'Why do old rich guys buy Porsches and let them sit in the garage?' It doesn't make sense to me. One wealthy car guy I know owns seven Porsches and drives em like crazy. He tells me they are meant to be driven and I agree. Thanks again for the link.
