Need some help on the short shafts.
 

I have been having some sqeling on the rear end. I had a friend look at the car on the lift with me in and had the car in gear and he is telling me that it is the rear bearing in or around the Trans. Where they go in to the trans. Ok he is a back yard mechanic and is saying that the trans need to come out and the bearings need to be replaced? First I need to know on the trans is their bearings for the output for the sort shafts. Second can I do this my self with the car on jack stands and the trans in the car.

Go get another opinion...not enough information here to help you with.

If youe buddy is referring to the inner CV joints, you do not have to remove the transmission. Not sure about the referral to bearings.

but if you are going to remove the gearbox.. do the IMS and RMS you'll be kicking yourself if you don't.

what is the rms. I know about the interm. shaft.

if you look at the tarns by its self. you will see a place where the cv joint is bolted on to the trans that is call the output shaft from the trans. this may be a BMW term but that is what I know for now

RMS = Rear Main Seal

IMSB = Intermediate Shaft Bearing.

Mileage? Year? Model? If your getting any noise at the rear of the engine, I would isolate it with a stethoscope. A member recently found the cause of his squealing to be a loose spark plug. However, it could be a number of things...
