For the bleeder, there are deep socket and shallow socket versions in 10 or 11mm. I purchased the deep socket 11mm version. The socket is hollow and it seems to be permanently attached to the reversible ratchet. It comes with a good quality bleeder hose (~1 meter length) that runs freely through the socket and ratchet.

I attached the bleeder hose to the clutch slave bleeder valve, attached the other end of the hose to my brake bleeder catch can, slid the ratchet/socket assembly onto the bleeder valve, made sure I had fluid and pressure in the Motive and let it rip. Standard operating procedure from that point forward. After bleeding, I just slid the ratchet/socket assembly down the hose and removed the hose from the valve.

I had also purchased a much less expensive ‘bleeder’ ratchet but it had a shallow socket that had a fixed grommet / hose assembly built into it and I did not like the way it barely fit and was difficult to remove from the bleeder valve (tested on a brake valve).

Just to mention that I had the braces, pan and midpipes removed, along with the axle disconnected from the trans axle, when I bled the clutch slave. Taking advantage of my axle / midpipe replacement project made for much easier access to the clutch slave.
Oldcarguy, those are innovative workarounds in tight spots e.g. clutch slave.

Finished installing (color-coded) LEDs into the taillights and front turn signals. The 5008 bulbs for the rear markers (between the rear fog and brake light bulbs) did not work with the LEDs I got so just added new bulbs for now. A Novita EP35 relay keeps the signal flashing correct.

Looked at the calendar and discovered it's only 51 days until "Boxster Freedom Day" when I will take it out of storage. It was -8 this morning so it's hard to imagine that in only 51 days balmy breezes will be blowing and it will be time (hopefully) for another seven months of top down driving!

Installed the new shifter cables and adjusted the shifter and the parking brake. Found a few more quarters hidden under the parking brake. Took the opportunity to install the newly painted white center console and it really makes a big difference on the interior.

Rotary encoder does not work as a rotary switch. My '99 OBC is enabled, but I have the basic display, so am going with poor-man's tip switch version. I did run across a 4-wat toggle switch that I considered to mount into the left bezel hole:

Tried a little experiment. Bought a leather cover for my console lid and tackled the install. Not hard, but not easy. Fortunately, I have a little experience with this type of stuff, so sort of had a clue going in. For $29.00 and about 2 or so hours... I think it worked out nicely!

TRIED to install the Bluetooth adapter and CDR220 this weekend but realized that the CDR220 doesn’t work to replace a CDR23 Bose unit. Different antenna connection and no connection to the Bose system.

Reinstalled original unit and back to square one.

Still looking for a way to run at least an AUX audio source (with Bluetooth preferred) for music in the 986S.

I’m not interested in replacing with a non-factory headset isn’t an option. I want to keep the original look but with updated tech. Ideas appreciated.

What did the install involve? Also do you have the take the console out to remove the armrest?

Take a look at the Continental radio. It looks OEM and has Bluetooth.

You are welcome. I have no idea if it does work with the Bose system but reading through that thread, someone linked to a harness that does connect to the MOST system.

Yeah, I came across that on their site. I'm now waiting on my inquiry to their service desk but if they give the Bose the green light I'll be doing this ASAP.

The armrest portion is simply the cover. It has 8 t-hex bolts that hold it to the frame. Open your console, remove bolts... Lifts right off. You must remove the factory vinyl cover by peeling it off and then scraping, pulling or whatever method to get the foam and old adhesive off. 3m 90 spray contact adhesive for regluing. The hard part is getting everything lined up and then folded down and properly laid down around the edges and underside. The piece is precut and fits well, but is pretty thick at the seams. One of my seams is a little off to the right in the pic. Not sure if I over stretched that portion or if that is just a bit off from the company. It is hand stitched so it’s possible it was a bit off to begin with.

New visor mirrors and covers are on. No soldering required! :)

Essentially one would remove the contact bars that the red and black wires are soldered to and transfer them from the old housing to the new housing. Snap the housing into the visor and presto, refreshed.

Put on new front rotors and pads. Had to take a lyft to the nearest home depot to get the T55 torx socket to remove the calipers.

Now I'm left with replacing the rear axle cv boots to pass MD's registration inspection

If i may make a suggestion on replacing your axle boots. I had to replace mine and i didn't use that evasive ball joint fork to remove the axle. I used a ratchet strap. It's harmless to the ball joint and you're not beating on your car.
Put the rear of the car on jack stands. chalk the front wheels. wrap one end of the strap around the ball joint carrier, place a floor jack under the centre of the rear suspension, feed the strap under the jack, wrap the other end of the strap around the upper control arm on the other side of the car and take up the slack. this creates a V under the car.
Now just gently pump the jack a few times and the ball joint easily pops out because you are using the weight of the car to pull it. Then just set the car slowly back onto its jack stands.

It works.

I can't take credit for this method. My neighbor is a retired Air Canada aircraft mechanic with an engineering degree and a brilliant mind.

I got the ones from pelicanparts. Rotors were Meyle (heard good things about them) $50-60 a corner, pads were oem-ish and $100. Got new screws/brake hardware at the same time. Old pads were good but just decided to do all of them together. Are you planning a brake job soon too?

i can't really visualize the set up in my head but i like the idea of using the cars weight to remove a part. Thanks for the tip tho, parts are really tough to remove sometimes and any leverage will save me a lot of headache. Will pop by a home depot and pick up a ratchet strap tmr!

My car's been off the road and in the shop since early last July for an engine rebuild. It took just a bit less than forever to have 3.6 LN Nickies installed, but the block came back a few weeks ago and the engine rebuild is almost complete now. Hopefully I'm back on the road in a couple of weeks and it will be broken in come Spring.

Gonna be 68* today in tucson. So today is the day I'll lift the car on jackstands and try to install a new AOS. Winter is our convertible & car repair season and mostly I've been doing everything but. If time permits, I'll tackle the driver's door window, too. I put a new regulator in last year, the window has stopped working again.:barf:

I like the idea of the 3.6 engine, PaulE, you're a much braver soul and have deeper pockets than I do. I'm kinda envious.:cheers:

Thanks Brian, I am going to be married to this car for a while. I struggled for a while with what to do, but in the end since there was no damage to the major engine components (block, crank, rods, heads) I decided to go for the rebuild rather than a used engine. I could have sold the car as a roller but it is really the perfect car for me to do a few HPDE's in each year and learn a bit about driving on the track. The Nickies at $5k were a luxury but Porsche OEM rings are $1,200, although there are others that cost way less than that.

I successfully swapped out the LCD with the part from 914rubber. The actual task was super easy. There was some rusting/oxidation on the metal frame that holds the LCD, orange card, etc. I hot that with some De-Oxit and then buffed it off. I wished for Emory paper to really clean it up, but I just used some elbow grease, fingernails and a microfiber cloth to clean it up. The end result is very pleasing.

I made the following repairs:

-replaced the MAF with one I found locally from a wrecker for $75. Thought it would roll the dice instead of buying new and that not solve my issues. I cleared the CEL with my Durametric. No more CEL and it runs way way better. Better idle, smoother at low RPM range and the smell of over-fuelling from the exhaust is gone.

-I replaced the steering wheel airbag retainer frame with OEM porsche unit to fix the common horn honk issue. Works great now! No more issues.

And of course took it out for a nice drive. Cold but sunny today in Vancouver BC area!

My next repairs include engine mount and shocks/struts all around.

It sure is rewarding bringing this little Boxster back to life after some hard years.

Spent the last 2 weeks fixing the rear cv axle boots. First time working under a car, was certainly interesting hahaha...

Points worth noting:
1. Left rear axle was stuck - had to soak the left rear axle in de-ruster, then use a axle puller borrowed from adv auto parts
2. Brought axle to this speciality axle shop in MD that has been fixing cv boots/axles for 15-25 years. Only costed me $130 with return shipping for all 4 rubber boots - would recommend
3. During reassembly, transmission undercover/rear sway bar refused to go back (~5mm gap!). Used ratchet strap to pull both suspension pillars together which lined up the holes correctly
