Head light upgrade
I have a 1999 Porsche Boxster and I've been thinking about upgrading my headlights. I was wondering if anyone has upgraded from standard headlight to Xenon or Litronic? Is there any additional wiring required or can you just unplug your old lights and plug in the new ones.... also i'm thinking about changing my stock boxster headlights for 2002 996 style headlights, has anyone tackled that kinda conversion? Thanks for the help

from what I understand, if you go OEM they are pretty much plug and play. you may have issues with the legality of litronics without washers.
also, there's a thread going on in the DIY forums about the ebay lights http://986forum.com/forums/diy-project-guides/34492-remove-amber-film-headlights.html you should take a look at those as well ... |
The 2001 and later Mk2 996 headlights are not the same as a Boxster or earlier 996s , and have a different bumper line than previous models. Earlier 986s and 996s are the same except i discovered the hard way that the 996 has a shinier cross pattern inside the light housing where as the 986 Boxster has straight lines and a less reflective surface inside.
The litronics are just plug in and play but if you want the touted self leveling feature there is some extra wiring and a module required that sells for a couple hundred bucks. |
The washers (or lack there of) do not cause any issues in most states.
Adding the module allows the low beams to swing up and fill in the high beams, it is not the self leveling feature, which cannot be retrofitted. The module is well worth the money. |
thanks i plan on switching the whole bumper to a 996 turbo style as well as the headlights... right now i have the boxtser stock headlights with a fiberglass aftermarket 996 turbo bumper and would rather have a OEM 996 turbo bumper on the car.... good to0 know most of the OEM headlights are plug and play
