Would you do it?
 

I was reading AutoWeek and saw an ad for the new Boxster. the ad mentions that you can have 265 HP in the new Boxster. Obviously referring to the base model. I looked more closely at the picture and the car has PCCB's. My question to you is this: Would you buy a base Boxster and pay the extra for Ceramic Composite Brakes?

NO. It is a lot of extra money for something you really do not need. I would spend the money on the "S" instead.

I almost received them on one of the cars I was negotiating on. Personally, given their ease of chipping and idiotic replacement cost, I'm far happier with the metal rotors. You guys nailed it, there are more gratifying adds for me or one can just use the savings as a down payment.

No. Even the GT3 guys who are ring regulars use steel discs...

It's become almost a gimmick, really. I see no need for them if you're not using the car as a strictly track vehicle. On the street you're not going to be doing much of anything that will heat those things up to where they work best, and I don't even want to think about the replacement costs for those and their components when they wear out.

I think one thing Porsche always got right and didn't skimp on with the Boxster was the brakes, and I doubt they did with the latest one. I've never driven a car with better barkes or with better feel (not that my list of driven cars is long or distinguished), and to me they're like the saving grace of the early, low power car. You can keep the speed up and brake at the last possible moment, and they'll work, and work well.

The Corvette I drove a few years ago was great, but it had a very spongey feel to the brake pedal and I didn't like that at all, especially for a car with more than twice the horsepower that needs to be able to stop well.

I figure if I ever get good enough to reach the limits of the base car's brakes on the track, then it may be time to look into some sort of upgrading. But for a car I'm going to spend more time driving on the street, I see no need for those PCCBs. On a street car they really just come off as something to make people ooh and ahh because you got thooose brakes.

These are good enough for Cayman X and 4.2 liters of fury Flat 6 Innovations fury :-)
