lower ball joint removal
Getting ready to do the rear wheel bearings on the 986. Wondering what tool everyone finds best for removing the lower ball joint on the hub carrier without damaging the boot.
I just looked at the pics on the forum and I can't tell for sure if the lower ball joint was loosened or not. I have the sir tool coming and I am going to try to change the bearing without removing the carrier. Can I turn the carrier enough to push the axle off to the side without removing the lower ball joint? I just can't tell from the pictures. |

that design looks perfect, and I can find them with jaw openings up to 22 mm which is not wide enough. I need 25 mm or up by my caliper measurement.

The scissor type works best, (when it fits). I keep a roll of self-fusing silicone tape on hand in case I nick the boot when I resort to a fork. And yes, you have to separate the ball joint to get enough clearance to push the axle out.

finally found one from summit racing. it has a 25.4 mm opening and was $48 including shipping. If anyone needs one, it is part number otc-6297
