Waterpump discussion (have you changed yours ?)

If so, at how many miles ?

If so, how many times has yours been replaced that you are aware of ?
(changed yourself or have had it done)

Was it preventative or did you have an issue with it ?

Just curious....

Yes 96K

It was original and appeared intact.

Slight residue from the weep hole indicating a failing shaft seal.

Just curious....

I had it done while the car was up on the rack for other issues.

120k miles after failure. I am going to change it proactively every 50k or 4 years from now on.

DFW02S 07-10-2012 09:37 AM

Changed it at 60k just because.

at 92k miles

1 time

It started making a noise on a road trip. Some coolant was leaking and drying / caking on the hoses. The blades were fine, but it had a slight wobble, which is what was making the noise as it was going around.

Thanks for the post; good info. My car has 58,000 and have been wondering about the expected life of the water pump.

cbbepop 07-10-2012 10:44 AM

changed it at 50k while doing the RMS leak, the dealer highly recommended it. Now that I think about it, im not sure if i could have waited....

BYprodriver 07-10-2012 10:59 AM

Replaced my oem pump at 80K because the pulley & shaft fell off.

oc-boxster 07-10-2012 11:05 AM

It was the first thing to be replaced on my 02 with 82,000 no service history of it being done, mechanic said mine had no issues but changed it out anyways while it was having low temp thermostat and cracked engine mount replaced. I was told its a good time to replace at same time as motor mount if it hasn't been done

truegearhead 07-10-2012 11:17 AM

I replaced mine at 85,000 miles. It seemed to be the factory unit. It was completely destroyed, luckily it started making a horrible noise so I replaced it before it failed. Super easy job. I did the whole thing from the access panel

Schedule to replace this year, 72k on the original.

pothole 07-10-2012 11:38 AM

Changed mine at 80k preventative.

No wobble upon inspection, but just a tiny bit noisy / rough when you turned it.

Motobob 07-10-2012 01:06 PM

Replaced mine at 28,000 on 2001S last Nov. It has shown just a hint of a drip on occasion...replaced it with an OEM part and no issues. Bob

Change at 64K. Pump was leaking.

bar10dah 07-10-2012 03:43 PM

I expect to replace mine in about two weeks, at around 77K. Preventative, of course, as mine isn't exhibiting any signs of problems. However, what's driving this replacement (in addition to already wanting to replace at around 75K miles anyways) is the fact that I more than likely have a motor mount to replace. Might as well do the water pump while I'm in there doing the motor mount. And, since I'm doing the water pump, might as well do the low temp thermostat.

Heck, along that line of thinking, since I'm replacing the thermostat, might as well replace the headers/muffler. And since I'm doing those, might as well buy the '13 Boxster. No, wait... ;)

Replaced @ 46,000 miles because it was 10 years old and original.
No issues or leaks, old pump shaft bearings still in good condition with impeller blades the same size / condition as the new pump.

thstone 07-11-2012 07:29 AM

110K miles. Never replaced. Worried more about the water pump than the IMSB. Plan to replace the water pump berfore going to Laguna Seca in late August.

sailing1 07-11-2012 07:39 AM

Replaced at 42,500 miles on my 01 base due to a very small leak and changing the coolant tank at same time.

SoK 07-12-2012 10:41 AM

Never been changed, no issues, 59,200 miles. Plan to replace it around April/May of next year as strictly preventative maintainance.

dghii 07-12-2012 11:15 AM

Not done (by me) on my 2000S with 103k, purchased in 08 with 76k miles.
