Aftermarket TPMS system recommendation
I've been thinking about buying a TPMS for my track rims. Suggestions or products to stay away from?

I bought this set from Tire Rack years ago, still working fine. You can set it to alternate between pressure and temperature.

Yup, I have the same, works without a flaw for years
|
ACTUALLY: it doesn't work so great on track tires:
So it measures temp and pressure - right? But it also alerts you when the tires get too hot. When you come from your session, the supert-hot brakes will fool the sensors into believing that your tires are too hot. Now you are stuck on the "high temp" warning screen and can't read the tire pressure, but maybe there's a trick to switch the warning off. |
I have the same system, and it's been great so far ( 1 year). Now I just have to get around to hard-wiring it.
Chris, can't you just set the high temp. alarm high enough so it's won't go in to alarm? |
How do the readings compare with good manual tire pressure gauge? Has anyone done repeated comparisons with a hand held gauge?
|
Replacing the tires soon, I'm also interested in getting a tpms while I'm at it
Any other opinions or is that orange model the best? |
Why? I have it, not impressed, I am still inclined to check it with a gauge. Better money spent would be on nitrogen. Now I know some here claim it's just PT Barnum filling your tires with a more expensive gas. However, the tire pressure stays rock solid, longer than air ever has.
|
What is it that you're "not impressed" about? The pressure readings have been very consistant for me, though 1 Psi above what my tire gauge reads. I bought one because, as you know, a 987 has no spare tire. So my only hope in avoiding a tow truck is to catch a leaking tire while it's still able to be plugged.

Why get TPMS? Tire guage is your friend.

OK, but if the tire starts to go flat I'm betting that you will feel it before you confirm it with TPS. You would have to add the tps readings to mirrors in sight rotation to catch it the way you describe, where I live you need to watch EVERY other driver more than ever before. I feel like I did on my motorcycle in the 80's only now it's the new normal for cars. |
It does have visual and audible alarm, so you don't have to constantly stare at the display. Modern tire construction can make flats hard to detect until they are very low, especially if you are on the highway, where even moderately low pressures can lead to overheated tires, and a potential blowout. Your car has a factory TPMS, so I agree it would have little benefit.

This is more important than TPMS...IMO.

Stephen I didn't know it has an audible alarm, reading is fundamental, guess I'll have to scour the manual when the weather turns cold and I'm wishing I could drive it.
|
No problem!
Ekam, that mobility kit won't help if you drive on an underinflated tire. It will quickly destroy the shoulder/sidewall to the point no inflation kit will be worth a damn. Having said that, I did add a plug kit and fix-a-flat to the factory compressor & slime kit. |
Orange P409s
I have put several of these in my 986, I am looking for something better, these last about 3 to 4 months then they show nothing but dashes where the numbers should be, has anybody tried something else that works?

I know some guys have the TPMS on there 987 and absolutely hate them. Plus they are another expense when replacing tires. Heard countless stories about them getting damaged and triggering the lights when the tire is just fine. You might find someone with a 987 that would gladly give them to you if they can. :D
On my 05 pre TPMS, I have the valve measurement kind. Its Green when the pressure is good and turns Red when it starts to drop below the limit. Easy to tell with a quick walk around the car before driving off. Not sure if this will work for your purpose but its been working fine so far. |
I was thinking about this, it LOOKS good, but don't know the Orange Electronics have been a huge disappointment, where did you get the ones you have?
