what's wrong with my top?

Before leaving the house this morning, I put the top down and heard what seemed like a bit more noise than normal, though the top went down without issue so I disregarded it.

Upon arriving at work and putting the top up, no unusual sounds. However, I walked around to the passenger side and see this bit where it should not be. What is this piece and what may have caused it to arrive in this position?

I will drop the top again on my way home and see what happens...

Yeah, that piece goes on the inside, not the outside. I'll snap a pic for you in a bit if no one else chimes in.

I figured that much out, thank you

Just curious if there are any thoughts as to why it decided to venture out this morning?

I think they are supposed to keep the top out of the clamshell linkages, but I don't see that they do much of anything.

They may also direct rainwater to the drains?

After putting the top down last night, unsurprisingly the plastic bit did not magically go back to its starting location. So I wound up just pulling it out and throwing it behind the seat

This week I will try to find some time to see if I can figure out what happened and if it can be reversed. I suspect that it wouldn't be there if it didn't serve some purpose or other... Thanks for the input.

Okay, that was a snap to put back in place.

How novel: a repair that took 2 minutes and cost nothing!

Now, lets see how long until it pops out again...

I do think it serves a purpose with the top down for aerodynamic noise reduction or buffeting.
