Royal Purple 10w40 $4.99/qt

I was just shopping for some 10w40 oil for my next change and I found Royal Purple on Autozone's site for $4.99 a quart. I cross referenced the item number and all looks good. I had to pay $13.50 in shipping for 10 qts (not available for store pickup) but it is still a really good deal for a full syn oil. I have never used Royal Purple before but I hear that it is pretty good stuff.

I switched from Mobil 1 to Royal Purple about 3 years ago for my 2002 Base. I like it. Seems like the engine is a lot quieter at idle than with the Mobil 1. Someone posted an article on this forum several years ago where the authors did some type of bearing wear test with over a dozen different brands of oil. Castrol and Royal Purple kicked everyone's butt.

$4.99 is like stealing. At Pep Boys it is normally $9.99 a quart. Stock up!

How does this compare to Motul 8100 X-Cess ?

I use my car about 3000 miles yr .. lots of track / autocross duty .. and mainly driving to the track.

Just paid $45 for 5L of 8100 shipped on Amazon but maybe I should cancel the order.

Okay, just bought 2 jugs of Mobil 1 5w-30 for my daughter's Beetle (can you believe this takes synthetic?) at Autozone. They had a promotion - one jug and a filter for $33. These are going back and I just ordered 16 quarts of the Royal Purple (wanted to get the free shipping). This works out good - 6 1/2 for the Beetle and 9 1/2 for the Boxster.
Thanks for the heads up on the deal.

Do the specs really meet the Porsche requirements?

It says "With Syntec" which to me hints that it is not necessarily 100% syntec and perhaps not even 100% synthetic oil.

Can anyone confirm positively that the Autozone Royal Purple stuff meets the spec for our Porsche engines?

Royal Purple is 100% Synthetic per their site. Syntech is an additive that shouldn't be in the oil per the item number. Must have been a stock photo on the Autozone site.

It doesn't look like Royal Purple is on Porsche's approved oil list. But they also frown on my BNC air filter, FVD software, techno torque plenum, 200 cell cats and even my Sirius receiver.

Did they give you a reason why your order was cancelled?

They said the vendor was out of stock, but then didn't offer a raincheck, which would be standard practice, which is why I kvetched about it.

Porsche-Approved Oils
Does anyone know if there are there any oil companies on the Porsche approved list that pay no money to Porsche but are still included?

In other words, does anyone know how an oil becomes "approved"?

I ordered some Royal Purple 3 days ago from Autozone and have not had the cancellation yet.
Perhaps they got more in stock?
I'll update when I hear more.
