Getting my wheels "plasti-dipped" today, what color?

matte black, satin black or gloss black? I'll post pics when its done.

Satin or Flat

Here is my Flat Black Plasti-dipped rims. This is an older pic. But I did plastidip my bolts black too afterwards.
Here is my DIY video I made for Plasti-Dip on my rims:

Glossy looks cheapish. Like chrome.

If there is anyway of avoiding coating where the lug nuts attach, try to do so. Someone who was tracking their car (an M3 I think) had their wheels platic coats and the heat softened the plastic which allowed the lug nuts to loosen. Luckily the instructor felt something a miss and they pitted before the wheel really got loose. Extreme conditions that maybe you'll never experience, but just thought I would share...

on your original question, go with what you like best! I personally think Satin would look best...

Do you know Steve Landstra? He has a track setup gray Corvette Z06 in PA and he is a racing instructor. He likes to take it to NJ, VA, and sometimes other tracks in the mid U.S.

He told me the exact same story with the M3 and plastidipped rims last week. He is the one taking me to the track this weekend.

All the recommendations so far have been for matte, so I'll go that route. Glad to actually see it on a boxster before i do it, thanks.

I'll make sure I have him spray the lugs too. leaving the logo'd center caps with the silver/dark porsche emblem alone, hopefully that looks good.

I'll get a pic up tonight.

Yeah that makes sense, I am on the Road Racing section of the Corvette Forum daily, so that is probably where I read that.

Personally, I'm not fond of the all black look, black car and black wheels. I'd like the wheels to contrast, even slightly. Like, having a silver lip around the wheel. Something. But, that's just my personal opinion. ;)

Not that it's a bad thing, but black out the lights too and it'll look like the batmobile! :)

lol i agree, the great thing about this plasti-dip product is that, once sprayed on the wheels, i can actually cut different parts off to modify the look. so i could actually cut the portion covering the lip off later.

my cousin thats doing the work just sprayed his entire acura tl down, looks pretty cool.

I did that, but I ended up not liking it as much as I thought I would especially since the plastidip covered the curb rash. So I just painted the entire wheel black.

Here is a edited pic I made a while ago using a free program called Acorn to show what it would look like to do that. I made this in 5 minutes so it is not the best work.

My actual wheel when I tried it.

Hey, how come no flames.....

Highlow 05-15-2012 12:57 PM

I did it a week and a half ago. Black on black.

I didn't put enough coats on so it doesn't look perfect (no one would notice unless they walked up to the car and got close to the wheels).

I'm happy enough with the outcome that I'm going to powder coat them in 2 or so months.

SoK 05-15-2012 04:34 PM

wheels are done and look excellent, uploading pics now. Have a feeling I'll be painting the car matte white soon..

my home computer won't let me view this site with firefox. My touchpad won't let me copy/paste links from photoshop. Anyone have an idea how to post these?

photoshop says I'm copying the image link from the site, but when I come here it won't let me post the link into the image button...

coat 2 of 4.

once I got home, I took a razor blade to the outside line of the engraved porsche emblem and peeled that portion off.

larger view. Very happy with the finished product!!

Question...how do you plan on dealing with weights when you put new tires on and balance? Pull off what you have and then respray the inside with a touch up can?

I am not a black rim fan, but this looks really nice on your car and the detail on the center cap is a really nice touch!
