Transport of 986 Boxster hardtop
Help, I want to pick up a used hardtop about 300 miles away in a couple of days. Can anyone comment on the feasibility of bringing it back (carefully) without the installation kit installed by relying on the front latch and securing the rear with line/wire hooks/bungy cord or ? The alternative is on top of my 525 wagon, which I don't like.
Thanks for a quick reply. |
I would think you could get away with that if you keep your windows up and your speed down. That's going to be the longest 300 miles you've ever driven.
Having it shipped isn't an option? Or maybe someone could lend you the spinlocks until you get your own? |
Secure it with zip ties so it wont rattle or bounce when you hit a bump. ;)

Have the installation kit (spinlocks) express shipped to you or the location where you are picking up the top. Hardtop/Speedster Hump Spinlocks:Porsche Parts & Porsche Accessories - Wholesale Porsche Parts & Tequipment - Cayman Panamera Cayenn
If this doesn't work within your time frame, I'd rethink your plan to drive that distance w/o them. When I picked up my hardtop the seller didn't have the spinlocks that he said came with the top so I decided to drive the 20 miles home w/ the top only fastened with the front latch. I stuck to side streets and took it pretty slow, but the top still bounced around when I hit bumps. I'd hate to see what might happen at highway speeds. As crazy as it sounds, duck taping (or other strong tape) at the lower rear edge of the top to the body "may" keep the top in place. You may be able to rig something as a temporary solution, but I'd hate to drive the 300 miles only to find out you can't safely bring the top home. Here is a link to the install process. It may shed some light on how to get the top home in one piece. Pelican Technical Article: Installing the Boxster Hardtop and Installation Kit - 986 / 987 http://boxster.wikia.com/wiki/Hard_Tops |

Took Aron's advice. waited a week, ordered and installed spin locks. Then drove to Buffalo for the top. Fit perfectly, though had to adjust the pin mounting plates to quiet some squeaks. Nice relaxing drive home the next day.
