New LED Lights- What do you think?

Just installed new clear LED lights bought off Ebay, to get rid of the egg yolks that had started to yellow. What do you think "nicer or "ricer" http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1336666274.jpg

IMO they're certainly better than the egg yolks.
Any pics of them with the LDEs/lights on?

LOVE the color of your car.

thstone 05-10-2012 08:27 AM

AWESOME! That is a million times improvement over the stock look. Very new and updated.

And yes, please post a pic with the lights on.

sgt brad 05-10-2012 08:44 AM

I think most agree that the led one piece light is a good alternative to the Bosch clears or litronics. I am interested in a review of the light output and build quality as well as seeing more pics. I will be watching this thread to see how it goes.

kitchenman 05-11-2012 08:07 AM

Here's a couple with the lights on. After driving a bit tonight with the lights on, my opinion is they are at least as bright as the factory lights if not brighter. My hope that these lights don't look cheesy as I have only done modifications that look kind of factory. IE cayman rims and updating badging. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1336752324.jpg

If they are not brighter than you old fogged halogens (e.g.: they are not HID's), I have to ask "Why?"................

sgt brad 05-11-2012 11:23 AM

i am no expert, but don't projector lenses convert to hid better than halogen lenses (ie; the hid beam is more focused and less diffused.) i am looking at options to increase light output without spending 3k in one pop for litronics. i am hoping to add hid to these led lights after having used them with halogens for a while.

gomarlins3 05-11-2012 02:11 PM

I like it better than the egg yellow.

jb92563 05-11-2012 02:19 PM

In the end its only your opinion that counts most as to how well they look, but for me i'd say that the updated lights make it look like a new model car rather than a 10+ year old.

Two thumbs up from me.

Ray

brian325is 05-11-2012 03:36 PM

I am with Ray on this. It is only your opinion that matters.

I have been wanting these lights for a while. Have them on my ebay wish list, but I am having a problem spending $1000 for them.

bar10dah 05-11-2012 04:14 PM

My opinion is the angled strips of LEDs make it "ricer" but the clear look makes it "nicer" so it's a toss-up.

wvboxst3r 05-11-2012 05:50 PM

Love the zenith blue and the lights. Looks like a newer year.

Fluellen 05-11-2012 06:09 PM

My opinion is that you are better off polishing the old lenses. If the yellow really offends you, clear OEM or Litronics would be - IMHO - a far more tasteful choice, and certainly more in keeping with the Porsche character of your car.

Eric G 05-11-2012 07:05 PM

I see someone who spent dollars and made their ride look nice. Always fun to put new stuff on, and its even better if the end result works like you hoped.

Pics from night time use?

Jaxonalden 05-11-2012 08:18 PM

Hey brother, I think they're sexy. A night time (dark) shot from the front (no headlights) would be nice. Then a night time shot from behind the windshield with the new headlights on will give us all a good data point over what we have now (halogen, Lit's or candles).

doragman 05-11-2012 08:25 PM

I like 'em -- if you no longer do ....I'll trade you my '99 's !!

particlewave 05-11-2012 08:36 PM

I have read descriptions and seen pictures of the lower leds being capable of operating as daytime running lamps as well. Have you looked into that at all? I wonder if its just model specific, or can they do either/both?

From an auction...

"For Cars That Do Not Have Daytime Running Light (DRL) Function: The Lights / HALO / LED Part Can Serve As / Give Out Daytime Running Light (DRL) As Extra Functions But In Order For It to Work, You Might Need Modifications To The Wirings And Plugs. Additional Wirings And Plugs For Daytime Running Light (DRL) Function Will Not Be Provided. ( Please Advice Mechanics For Installation And Remember that PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED )"

That's where I am as well. They don't fit the style or lines of the car, regardless of year.

ekam 05-12-2012 04:12 AM

There's a long thread over at 6speed forum with these lights, I hope the earlier QC problems have been rectified.

These lights are designed for halogen bulbs, although you can get a HID kit from ebay that will fit, they are not the proper HID bulb sockets.

particlewave 05-12-2012 10:55 AM

I have yet to see any headlight option that I like. Yes, the stock lights grow on you, but they are still ugly as heck. That's always what people see, always the first thing they mention, especially kids. I just took the box to my cousins yesterday and his 6 year olds first comment was that the "lights are ugly".

Even the stock lights don't "follow the lines of the car". Look at the turn signal/front bumper line.

I'm thinking new fenders, frunk lid, and bumper, upgraded to the modern look.

cbbepop 05-12-2012 11:24 AM

I like the egg look of the 986 and 996 headlights
They were original and had character.
The new 981 headlights, though modern looking, have a g35 or nissan altima look to them that is defined by those cars.
The 987 I headlights are just uninspired teardrops that looks like they came off a mini or vw beetle.

I do like the 987II headlights the most though!

What makes these aftermarket headlights kinda rice is not the LED (cause everything have LED these days) but the amount of chrome on them. I saw a blacked out version somewhere online.

Ghostrider 310 05-12-2012 11:40 AM

I think the new units look far superior to what you had in there. All I would do is avoid the multi LED rear units, I think together that might be too much but the headlamps look litronic - esce and apparently cost much less. Only Porsche guys will know them from litronics.

tamagee 05-25-2012 07:03 PM

Looks good. I'm considering these for my 02. A few questions:
Are these real projectors?
Are the turn signal leds bright enough?
Do you have any picture at night?

Thanks.

Roy_Josef 06-11-2012 06:12 PM

Two thumbs way up! Your car looks a decade newer with 2 minutes of work. Nice.

Crono0001 06-11-2012 08:39 PM

Personally, I would've kept the original OEM lights. I know the orange amber kinda kills it, but something about those LEDs don't strike me right.

On a side note, the chrome really makes it look new. I have to give you that. Takes away 10 years from the car I think.

Crono0001 06-13-2012 12:46 PM

EDIT: You know, this post has been bothering me a lot. I've been going back to this thread and I've concluded that I actually really like these lights, despite my initial impression. Once they're on your car, they make it look magnitudes better. Now I'm undecided on what I want to do -_-

Do these take H7 HIDs?

Au contraire. The stock lights do very clever things with the bumper line. What they do is carry the bumper across the light unit along the divide between the clear and amber part of the light.

Personally, I think the original 986 lights are a very, very nice bit of design and help make the early 986 easily the prettiest Box of all.

But hey, we all like different stuff.

does anyone who have these lights have trouble with them? I purchased mine from jeff (jezzsb@aol.com) about 6 months ago. even though i love the look of them, i have had so many problems with them.

1. they don't fit exactly. i can't seem to "lock" them in place. therefore, i just slide them into the housing and cross my fingers that i don't brake too hard to where they slide back out.

2. the light brightness absolutely suck. i tried changing the bulb, but no help.

3. the main bulb keeps burning out. hence the opportunity to try different bulbs as above. but why is this happening?

4. the led row lights are also burning out. since i installed them 6 months ago, i have had 4 of the led bulbs burn out. (and the main bulbs burn out 3x's already). i thought led were suppose to last forever...at least longer than 6 months. i don't even know how to change these so now my headlights look poke-a-dotted.

5 i have addressed these issues with jeff on multiple occasions, and he says that he will be sending me a new pair, but again, it has been 6 months in the waiting. yes, these issues were apparent on delivery.

any suggestions? anyone have similar issues?

Meat Head 05-17-2013 03:27 AM

I have a question about your Cayman wheels. Did you need spacers or are they bolted up using your existing lugs? I think they look awesome and I'm contemplating purchasing a set for my 1998 Box.

Nimbus117 05-17-2013 05:08 AM

What a bargain, these are about $15,000 over here:
