De-amber; how easy is it?
I've seen a few forum users list deambered lights. Id like to do that but I'm worried I'd botch the job. How easy is it on the front lights? Looks to me like one section is covered in film while the other section can snap out. Can I just try and peel this film off or is it more than that? Can I buy the corner piece in clear plastic somewhere?
Any recommendations for smoking the amber on the back? Thanks guys and gals! |

If you are looking to actually de-amber headlights that are already considered the clear style headlight (2003 and 2004, which are clear on the outside but have amber inside), then try these pages. There is a lot of good information. I followed these instructions and it was not that hard. Take your time and you should be fine.
If you have the 1997-2002 headlights with amber on the outside, you cannot remove it. Some have tinted over it, or you can buy 2003-2004 headlights on Ebay. Clear Lights Instruction for Amber Lens removal |
Thanks guys. Unfortunately I have a 99 so from what I read in the link by md10835 I cant get the amber off as its infused in the plastic. I may decide to spay on the black because to get that more modern look. Ive try the plastic film in the past and Im not a fan.

Easiest thing to do is leave 'em well alone. Ambers on the 986 completely rock.

To me, that's the best part of that shape of headlight. I was looking at a 99 a few months ago and was glad they had kept the originals. I would have had to find some and switch it back to stock. I ended up missing the car by a day (a deal was already pending when I found it). |
Yeah, I wouldn't let it stop me buying the car. Plenty of crazies out there you'll give you a set of ambers + $$ in returns for a set of clears. In that sense, I'd view clears as desirable on a car I was buying. You'll get paid put to it back to ambers and have cash to spend on the car.
