Best Oil
 

I Know this subject has been discussed at length, with a lot of commentary and even some heated discussions. However, I am about to do my first oil change on my 99 Boxster with 68,000 miles.

I have no idea what kind of oil is currently in the car. I am looking for an oil that will:

#1 Quiet Start up Noise
#2 Have a viscosity and weight that is good year round for my climate (30 degrees low to 95 degrees hot)

I would appreciate any educated recommendations from you guys.

From what I have read I would say a 0w40 or maybe 5w40

I believe that Porsche recommends Mobil 1 Synthetic 0-40w.

- 0w40 or 5w40
- Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec/Edge
- Change every 5K miles
- Manually check the filter element for metal debris (small yellow/brown rubbery bits are leftover engine gasket seal and are generally ok)

I've heard good things about Redline and Motul also .

5W40 for winter and 10W40 or 20W50 for summer. :cool:

My wife drives the 2K S as her daily driver. It now has 68K miles as well. I think many of the oils folks here on the forum recommend are probably OK. With over 40 years of motorcycling I choose to spend my money on Castrol Syntec 10W-40 for year round use. I am currently considering going to 10W-50 or 15W-50 for summer. Not sure if there is a discernible benefit yet.

I truly believe Mobil 1 is no longer the oil it used to be. I believe they stopped using Base 4 and 5 stocks and now only use Base 3. What a shame.

Just this week changed oil on my 2000 base w/92,300 mi from Castrol Syntec to Redline 5w40. Engine is much smoother, not that it wasn't smooth before, but such improvement has me wondering. Been changing oil + filter every 5,000 mi.

+1 on oil filter autopsy. Every change.

Used Red Line 5W40 for a few years with excellent results. Now, for the past 2 changes, I am using Porsche approved 5W50 Mobil 1. Hard to find oil, but it's out there. I like the results even better. Here is my UOA:

Fuchs Titan 5w40 is the right oil to use in Porsche
 

Its the factory fill in Germany and has the right additives for the rubber used in Porsche engines. It has no recycled oil and is on the Porsche recommended list. Motul 5w40 can also be used, same company.

isnt the 5w50 the racing oil with group IV?

Did an oil change last Monday - Castrol Edge Sport 0w40

Changed the oil last night for summer, mobile 1 5w40.

I don't know. It's NOT a racing oil. But it could be a group IV. Look here:

Redline 5W-40 or 10W-40?
 

Dave Granquist at Redline suggested either of these oils for my 2004 Boxster S. (Live in a really warm inland part of Southern CA.) I've relied on Redline products for a bunch of collector cars. But I'm way short on personal expertise; like a lot of you I often rely on anecdotes of others and the best information I can find. Looking at Redline's technical data, I can see that the viscosity properties of both oils are indeed nearly the same for anything likely to be encountered in this climate.

Just reviewed my original owner's manual (MY 2004) this morning. Interesting read, clearly advises 10W-40 "or heavier," even for synthetics, 10W-40 seems to be the first choice listed for most climates. But wasn't Porsche openly endorsing Mobil 1 0W-40 well before 2004 model year?

Guess we sometimes need to use our own best judgement. Fifteen years back, Mercedes here in the states discouraged use of synthetic oil at the same time they extended the service intervals. They even encouraged dealers to give owners of new cars (including me) a "courtesy" oil change at 1000 miles, tossing out the factory synthetic fill. Result (surprise!) was sludge, eventually they offered extended engine warranty to deal with it.
