2000 Boxster Front Trunk Release
 

Hi, a new member here with a 2000 Boxster that I purchased one month ago (after lurking here and receiving some terrific insights - thanks to all). I have, of course, read about the need to access and use the emergency trunk release in 986's if the battery dies and the front trunk is closed. I have a simple (and prehaps stupid) question: since the 2000 Boxster has cable activated releases for the front and rear trunks (although the rear can be opened electronically with the key fob), should I not be able to open the front trunk even if the battery is dead? I understand that it was not until the 2001 model year that the cable activated releases were replaced by electronic ones, so can I save the time and effort involved in re-routing the emergency trunk release?

If it's cable there's no need to worry. You can unlock the driver's door by insert and turning the key and pull the frunk release lever.

The concern is only for electric frunk/trunk release.

Thanks ekam, that was my assumption. I could have disconnected the battery and tested it, but really didn't want to have to re-program the stereo if I could find that answer here. It does make one wonder, however, what the Porsche engineers were thinking about when they 'upgraded' to an electronic front trunk release when the source of the electrical current - the battery, is stored there. Just saying.....

They assume that your vehicle is regularly serviced at the dealer, of which they should always check the battery level for you. If you're not driving the vehicle, a battery maintainer is always plugged in to maintain a charge.

There is a way to get to the emergency frunk release cable, so it's not the end of the world...

When my battery died last winter it still had enough charge for the windows to roll down and for me to open the frunk. I replaced it with an Optima redtop.

Thanks Ekam - I had already read Mike Focke's (and some other articles) re: Boxster batteries and on locating and re-routing the emergency front hood release and was, as indicated, hoping to avoid the latter. Regardless of battery maintenance and the various features on the Boxster designed to reduce battery drain when the engine is turned off, there is still the risk of a malfunction/short in the electrical system leading to a dead battery.

As I live near Toronto, can I ask where you purchased your Optima?

I know someone who could order it direct from the distributor under his business, but I'm pretty sure most garages can order it for you since Optima is under the same company that also owns Interstate batteries.
