Statistics of engine replacement in Boxsters

I still have not gotten my boxster yet. the one I check out had to many problems.

I am very spooked out by this engine failure problem I keep hearing in all thesee forums. Does anyone have a any statistic on how many boxsters engines died and had to be replaced. Everyone talks about this so much it is making me very scared to buy a used boxster. I can't afford a new one. I am so in love with the car. bUt I can't afford for and engine to die and cost me over $10000 to fix.
Are people exaggerating or have there been that many engines that died.

If there any links or charts with how many boxster engine died I would love to see the truth.
thanks

Thank you very much. this link was good info

I have a question. here is the quote

"There's a build-date period from October, 1998-March, 1999 that you want to avoid. There was a problem with the engine block casting plant and they used some slightly imperfect and repaired blocks. Those are the ones that have had the siginificantly higher failures according to Panorama magazine."

Does anyone know the exact vin#s or dates of this build period where the engines were messed up.

This way I can avoid them when looking for a used car.
thanks

Actaully let me re do that. Does anyone have a list of vin# to avoid. I see you see sai between March 98-99. I assum the hole year of 1999. If not when in 1999 were the cars fixed, Or should I stick to buying a 1997 or 2000 on up and avoid 1998 and 1999 all together.

Thanks

Personally, I'd go 2000 up. Since it was a brand new model in 1997, there were many bug fixes done by the 2000 model. Plus, the engine went to 2.7l that year.
