After Shutdown- clicks and ping sounds

I have been reading the forum for a couple of months and it is finally time to post something!

After I shutdown my '01 Boxster, dull ping and click sounds come from the engine area.

I assumed it is just part of the car cooling down, but I have never owned a car that made these noises. The car runs great and doesn't have any issues, so I am not terribly concerned. However, I would like to know the cause? If this has already been covered in another thread, I apologize...

Thanks....

totally normal. metal cooling / contracting

These sounds are almost certainly exhaust system cooling sounds...these cars come with a huge muffler. There is a lot of metal there (in complex shapes ) contracting due to cooling, against the constraints of its construction

The fan too...

Still remember the first time I heard the fan running in the garage 15 minutes after I turned the car off...That took some getting used to also.

All sports cars make that pinging and tinging noises after shutdown.

At least the ones that get driven like a sports car should!

My first sports car and it scared me for weeks. Still sounds funny, but now I love that sound just means I am grinning from ear to ear.

Funny how these cars give us grins just as wide when we enter the car, and the same when we leave!

Welcome to pure driving pleasure!

I think those sounds comes from Catalytic converter..

Porsche cars have made that noise going back to before there were cat converters, my brother had a 73 911T, did the same thing, what an awesome car that was.
