100,000 miles easy...How do I get to 200,000??
 

Hey guys,

I've reached 110,000 miles and my 2005 987 S still drives the same way it did when I bought it with 18,000 on the odo. I'd like to keep it that way, so I'd like to ask for some advice on what to replace or do maintenance on at this time.

Ive done regularly scheduled maintenance and oil changes (Redline 5w40,new filter)
Ive had relatively light issues:
32,000 top failed, Fixed under warranty
45,000 front left radiatior squealed, Replaced under warranty
80,000 miles, POP! Replaced conv top ball attachments, DIY
Replaced with Optima battery 100,000 Miles

And a few issues now:
Driver side window wont automatically lower the full 1/4 inch most times when u pull the handle to open the door; only lowers like 1 or 2 mm, so it doesn't close fully
I believe one of the lifters is dirty, as there's been very light ticking back there for over a year now at idle at times.
Center radiator squeals on cold days rarely. Temperature has never been past 12:00 position.
Very rarely, at idle I will drop a couple hundred RPMS then back to normal, then a couple hundred, then back to normal and so on, then minutes later its fine.

I drive daily, occasionally long distances, and sometimes hard. Ive never auto crossed but might in the future. I don't care about resale value, I'll be keeping this car forever. Love it.

While I'm no mechanic, Id say I'm technically inclined. Ive replaced every bulb, the brake pads, filters, etc myself with this sites help. Id like to know what to work on next, (serpentine belt?, hoses?, suspension?, coolant?, spark plugs?, radiator?, exhaust???), what I could do myself or what I might need a mechanic for, and if anyone knows how to solve these minor issues I have^^.

Get the spark plugs and fuel filter replaced if you have not already done so. The spark plugs are a pain the the rear to get to and work on, but if you have the gumption you should be fine. Many people change all the filters in a car sans the fuel filter, so be sure to check it out after 100k miles.

spark plugs are good maintenance along with the serpentine belt, filters ect. If you want to get more involved change the AOS as preventative.

Would definitely r&r the water pump.

to get to 200k i would expect you'll need to do:
- aos
- coolant tank
- serpentine belt
- spark plugs
- water pump
- alternator
- clutch
- cv boots

FYI. The 987 does not have a fuel filter, that is maintainable. It's part of the pump, which is in the tank.

Spark plugs and serpt. belt should have been replaced a long time ago.

You should flush the coolant (you'll need about 2-3 gallons of Porsche conc) and do a trans gear lube change (3 quarts OEM Porsche fluid).

Before your next oil change (I ran 5W40 Red Line for a few years, good stuff) run 2 tank fulls of fuel with Chevron Fuel System Cleaner with Techron. Re-fill the 3 rd tank with fresh untreated gas. Then change oil. This may help your sticky lifter.

Should I take it to a shop to do a coolant flush/trans gear lube change or could I do that myself in the garage? Same question about the serpentine belt and water pump.

The spark plugs.... Ill have to get tons of beer and a weekend off....

I heard about the chevron stuff. Thanks for that. And I think Flavors right, i heard that the fuel system was integrated with the tank. Bummer.

The alternator and clutch are things I should let wear out and fix at that time right? Or should I just replace them now, cause they're working fine.

I recommend that you trade it in for a 2009 or higher....

Just can't justify spending 2009 money for only slight performance increases.

All the repairs listed by others above will add no value to your car.

Checking a 2005 S with 110K miles pricing against a 2009 S with 20K miles pricing shows about a $27k difference which is more than I thought it would be....

I've just seen too many owners including myself hang onto a car way too long and suffer great financial loss.

The belt is cheap and easy, do it. Keep the old one in the frunk.

No need to change the coolant, wait for a leaking hose, tank, or water pump.

Let the alternator and clutch go until they fail.

I have a 2006 boxster s with 50000 miles and love it,only minor issues so far.Regarding the windows there is adjustments under the door,you will see 4 plastic caps.remove them and see the adjustment nut,2 are for up and down adjustment and 2 are for angleing window in or out.Can,t remember which does what but google it and you will find the info,really easy to fix.Have you ever changed your manual gear oil.Porsche tells me it almost will never need changed maybe at 240000 kilometers,dosent sound rite to me.

Just gone passed 100k, I was so much not looking forward to seeing that number of miles on the clock, but since it ticked over that milestone on the way down to Torquay last weekend in this glorious weather we are having, it's been like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders, and it has been immaculately behaved in my 30k ownership, I now feel like "OK bring on the next 100k" and that's a lot of Boxster driving miles to go before I start worrying about numbers again.
