Brakes not bleeding properly

bleeding the brakes but they won't adjust properly??, there is a prominent vacuum sound around the master cylinder area under the cover where the mechanical operating system of the brakes is, around the rubber socks.could there be an air leak or could the master cylinder need replacing..appreciate suggestions...97 boxter

Do you have any pedal at all after bleed? If you have even a small amount of pedal and when you press hard on it you get a hard pedal feel followed by a gradual sinking toward the floor the Master cyl is toast. If you changed the brakes and everything before the change was copacetic then it's likely not the master. However if you started messing with bleeding because the pedal has been squirrel-y then it sounds like the master.

They had a problem with water intrusion and rusting of the master cylinder in 97. Search around this forum as it has been discussed here before.
