And Leon's Getting Larger............

I saw these pictures on another site a member took of the new 991 911 series vs. the older 993 series (1995-1998) of the 911. The new 991's roofline looks similar to the Panamera in one of the pictures, the overall size increase in the cars is amazing when they're viewed side by side. Since the overall bloating of "sports cars" topic has been discussed recently I've been paying more attention to newer cars' proportions vs. prior generations. It should prove interesting to see pictures of the new Boxster sitting next to the 986 series.

Now for the TRULY amazing stat:

Per Porsche, 991 curb weight is 3,042 lbs vs the 993 curb weight of 3,064 lbs. Mainly achieved through extensive use of aluminum and high strength steels, you gotta hand it to them.

damn it... I have to go shopping again

Also note that the seating position are totally different on these cars. You can actually see the headlights and hood sitting in the 993.

Not that you could see much of the engine in a 997, but basically all you see in the 991 is the air intake plastic. The headlight covers have an interesting shape - kind of like an eyeball with an astigmatism.

I was looking at an article on Excellence last night while on my throne (aka toilet) and kept getting flashbacks of Panamera from certain angles on the 991

The Carrera is becoming too Gran Turismo for my liking .

jcb986 02-03-2012 05:11 AM

Ford did the same thing to the T-Bird...radical...57 was a 2 seater 58 was a 4 seater. And the Corvette...I want a sports car period. None of all the bull**************** they put on it...:troll:

I know which one I would prefer! In fact, I am harboring thoughts of unloading the Boxster and switching to an air-cooled 911...

Agree... Do you think the new 911 is a sports car? Looks like the jump seats are becoming just seats.

The took the 987 boxster, the cayman, and the carerra.... overlapped the 3 layers, gave each 33% transparency (all in PhotoShop of course) and this new shape/design was born

Wouldn't be surprised the the Panamera have been layered from a fish, a turtle, and a lobster

Ghostrider 310 02-03-2012 07:34 AM

Turbo look fatness no longer an option code.

AndyA6 02-03-2012 08:07 AM

Sign of the times I guess....

The 991 is so much faster than the older models, that's for sure. BUT, I for one would like to see a bare bones Porsche without any gimmicks for a price that is somewhat affordable and it has not to be an RS model.

Ghostrider 310 02-03-2012 08:26 AM

Andy, IMO, they don't want to put out a high performer at a price fighter price, it cannibalizes the high end 911 prices and I believe Porsche desires a level of exclusivity. Furthermore, the multi adjustable power seats on the escape are standard, traction control doesn't cost you a side dish for the next 60 months, add a couple small things to the base Porsche and it escalates in price as fast as it accelerates.

Too much of a good thing.

Perfectlap 02-03-2012 02:01 PM

well that's one way to get the engine further towards the center....Make it longer than a Corvette.

there was an article in Excellence magazine like two years ago where they put an 1970's Targa next to a RUF Targa (which is basically a 997 with a Targa roof mod) and I couldn't not believe how much bigger the 997 was. The old Targa is more the size of a Cayman while the 997 was HUGE, and I am sure the 991 is even bigger now

It's not just Porsche. Forget who it was, maybe C&D, they photographed a 90's Taurus SHO in between two new ones and the 90's one was absolutely DWARFED (silly word to put in all caps - LOL) by the new. I think the mirrors on the new were well over the hood on old and roof line from 90's was barely to middle of window on new. You see the same thing w/ all mfg... look at an orig Toyota Camry vs new or Nissan Maxima... the list goes on...

I'll be at the unveiling tomorrow. I'll take lots of pics and see how she feels. My friend got confirmation his will be in mid-March I'll get 3-4 days in it and see how she feels. I'm really curious to see how big it actually is.
