Gear Oil 75W-90

hello guys.
thinking about changing the transmission oil in my car.
what will be a recommended brand?

2001 Boxster S 6 speed trans.

JFP in PA 12-13-2011 09:52 AM

Everyone of our customers that have tried anything other than the OEM (a full synthetic) gear oil, and that is just about all of the aftermarket stuff out there, have all ended up draining it out and going back the the OEM product due to poor shifting, noise, etc. after only a short time.

Hello JFP,
How often do you recommend to change the gear oil?
.

Meir 12-13-2011 11:50 AM

Once again we meet.

And once again I will take your advice.
Is there an online source I can order it, or just go to the nearest dealership?
By the way, I got the Wix 51042 oil filter as you recommended, looks a little bit small for a 3.2 engine.

Depends upon the car and how it is used (or abused). Usually, changing it between 35 and 45K miles seems a safe bet for a daily driver (yes, I know that is well short of the recommended distance). Like all lubricants, the OEM full synthetic gear oil will break down with both miles and time, so a garage queen that does not see a lot of miles; I would drain it around every 5-6 years, just to be safe.

A couple of decent online sources can be found if you do a search, but they are often no better than your local dealer. You could also give Sunset Porsche in Beaverton, OR a call ((800) 346-0182), they price very aggressively and offer quick service as well.

As for the Wix 51042, this is one example of where size can be deceiving. It is the filter designed for the 6 and 7 liter LS engines series in Corvettes. That unit can flow over 11 gallons of oil a min., well beyond what your engine can pump. If you cut one open and measure the total surface area of the media, you just might be surprised how much is in there. It is a great filter, usually also at a great price......

thanks JFP

It is a pleasure reading your posts.
I appreciate your patients and your detailed answers.
That’s what happens when the last time you replaced an oil filter was 15 years ago:D

Meir 12-13-2011 02:45 PM

one more

i found this one on Suncoust website.
Manual Transmission Fluid - 75W - 90:Porsche Parts & Porsche Accessories - Wholesale Porsche Parts & Tequipment - Cayman Panamera Cayenn
is that the one?

JFP in PA 12-13-2011 03:01 PM

Looks like it; the Suncoast group have been pretty good, but give Sunset a phone call (they currently do not have a parts website), they are often cheaper, even including the freight. I get a lot of stuff from them, and have used them for many years.

Meir 12-13-2011 03:45 PM

Thanks for the recommendation. I will call them tomorrow.

I used the gear oil from Sunset. Here's my UOA from the factory fill:

Meir 12-14-2011 12:44 PM

Ordered the oil today.

The guy was very kind and helpful.
The price was 24$ for the liter (4$ cheaper then Suncoast) and will be shipped to me today.
I told them JFP sent me so they gave me another 50% discount

LOL………. just kidding :D

Any way, I’m definably going to check them out every time before buying an OEM part.

Thanks JFP.

If it makes you feel any better, we recently serviced the gear box in a Nissan, with $126 of a GL-4 full synthetic gear oil. $20+ per quart is not uncommon for these lubricants.......

dghii 12-15-2011 01:29 PM

Porsche gear oil....

...is expensive but not really that bad.

Considering if you were to fill with 3 liters of synthetic gear oil, you'd find it ranging from $14 to $20 (valvoline to Royal Purple or Redline).

Given the reports that some owners have not been happy with the aftermarket products, the OEM stuff is not bad, say and extra $15 to $30 for the whole job...not much for something done so infrequently.

Comments like this are always kinda funny.:)

How did you spend this month at Starbucks/Caribou Coffee/Peet's/Biggy/etc.?

$72 over 50,000 miles = $0.00144/mile (proactive maintenance)

$72 over 100,000 miles = $0.00072/mile (Porsche scheduled maintenance)

You can afford it, Blue. Now, do the right thing (who can name the TV show?).

$72 to protect a $4K trans? No brainer.

jmatta 12-16-2011 04:33 AM

I always get a kick when people buy a Porsche and then try to skimp on maintenance costs. If you wish to save $, learn to do maintenance or repairs yourself, but always use the finest products.

I spend $0.00 on coffee every year, thank you very much.

If you think I made that comment without consideration of value, you're sorely mistaken. It's everyone's responsibility to be a smart consumer and vote for products that provide the performance required for the price that is compeditive within the market. This mindless "buy it because Porsche says so and it costs more because it's better" crap is the real problem.

I always get a kick when someone posts that they've just installed the greatest component ever because someone on the internet told them it was so.

Meir 12-16-2011 06:32 AM

i agree

Especially when it has to do with the power train.
Oil system, cooling system - only OE or after market parts that are recommended as better.
Just changed my water pump, hoses, coolant and thermostat.
All parts are OE accept for the thermo from LN.
The total cost was 600$ - half of what I would pay in a dealership.
If I would use after market parts, I could save 200$. Is that a lot? Yes
Dose it worth it? Not to me.
Next project I intend to do, is replacing the torn rubber boots on my rear axel.
I thinking about replacing the CV joint as well, although they are not “clicking”
In that case I will probably use an after market product, but only one that is an OEM supplier.

blue2000s 12-16-2011 06:47 AM

Subarus have very touchy syncros. Subaru has a proprietary synthetic transmission oil that they use called Extra-S. It makes a noticeable difference in performance when used compared to other fluids. Last year, I went to the dealer with a 1 gallon empty jug and had them fill it up with Extra S for $8.23/quart. That's value, that's customer service, and that's the way it should be. That's why I comment and that's why you guys who mindlessly go along with what some false authority tells you are messing it up for everyone.

Flavor 987S 12-16-2011 06:55 AM

So Blue, what trans fluid do you receommend? What do you use? When did you change it last, if ever? VIN number, or at least the last few digits.

stephen wilson 12-16-2011 10:29 AM

Meir,
You shouldn't have to replace the CV's, just clean, regrease, and install a new boot. I've replace the boots on my Toyota truck many times, but I still have the original joints at 185,000 miles.

I buy Swepco tranny oil (our forum owner says he does too) and Zerez coolant and my car runs great.

VIN number? What's your wife's middle name? Just as random a question.

"I always get a kick when someone posts that they've just installed the greatest component ever because someone on the internet told them it was so."

What is your comment supposed to mean? I follow the advice of the experts here, not the Walmart jockeys. Jake Raby, Charles Navarro and JFP in PA have a lot more insight as to the "real world", than the vast majority of posters here. Put whatever you want in your car...I'm not going to buy it...I prefer mine to last a few more years.

Exactly.
