Seats for 2000 Boxster S

I bought the car with non-stock seats (GT3? or something the PO said). Not comfortable and definitely not digging it. Want to replace them. Apart from looking for used Boxster seats what options do I have as far as interchangeable or compatible seats are concerned from other models and years?

Thanks.

Dale_K 12-11-2011 05:03 AM

Post up a couple of pics of your seats. I bet you could get somebody to trade with you.

Johnny Danger 12-11-2011 05:27 AM

Let's see the seats . Maybe I'll trade you .

stcroixdrew 12-11-2011 05:41 AM

I have a set of grey seats from my MY98....drivers full adjust..no heat and pass side full power as well for a pass seat. The drivers seat DOES have wear and small hole in the bolster and the stitch up top corner has broken a few inches near your shoulder area ....pass side is in awesome condition (as usual) 9 of 10..... I live near Philly so not far away and I know Long Island well. Looking to get rid of them cheap...but the drivers side does need work.....I had someone who was going do just do seat covers over both but he hasnt followed thru yet. Let me know if I can give you a deal that you cant refuse.

Daniel R 12-11-2011 05:44 AM

Definitely post some pics.

Someone will trade with you, or else you might get a decent cash offer to buy them.

Chuck W. 12-11-2011 06:48 AM

If they are OEM GT3 seats they are worth double the cost of standard seats. Post some photos.

fivepointnine 12-11-2011 07:05 AM

if they are black Ill trade you!

Well said...... ;)

I guess I'm the shark bait! And I thought fish were friends, not food!

Here's a few pics. It's made of carbon fiber with leather inserts. Nice seat. I'd use them if I was 18 years old! Need to find the value first though. Not sure what trade value it would have against stock seats. Inputs appreciated.

And it sounds like you didn't even pay extra for the car because of the seat .. some people just have all the luck .. LOL

jacabean 12-12-2011 04:12 AM

are they the real ones or the rotec ones?

jrj3rd 12-12-2011 06:01 AM

look aftermarket

don't remember ever seeing a colored crest on originals Also I thought all the 996 GT3 variants had "non carbon" shells

Perfectlap 12-12-2011 06:21 AM

Those are definitely replica seats. By the looks of the crest and stitching I'm going to say they were not made by aftermarket racing seat maker. So I'd say the stock seats are more valueable if both were new.
But since you are looking to trade used for used, then you should probably list them on Ebay to get a sense of what they're worth right now. Either way the stock seats are definitely safer in daily driving situations, those have been crash tested.

I had a feeling, but my experience is not in GT3 seats. That puts a completely different spin on the post. I have no idea the worth of replicas, but I am guessing a straight swap for OEMs might be fair.

fivepointnine 12-12-2011 07:07 AM

I still like them!!!

Perfectlap 12-12-2011 07:08 AM

Replica seats could be made of Kevlar, I think that might be the Rotec reference another poster alluded to. That would definitely put them in the pricey range. But if they are simply Ebay replicas mounted onto some no name frame then they probably meet no racing standard, which imho are already pretty low for most inexpensive commercial racing seats -- not meant for daily driving because they would probably bend like Pepsi can in a real accident. I guess its like a novelty racing helmet (no certification) commemorating your favorite racing driver, might look nice on the book shelf but you probably wouldn't use it while in an actual car.

Johnny Danger 12-12-2011 08:06 AM

It's possible that they're older style GT3 seats from Max Speed Motorsports . Also, the crests look like someone may have simply stuck a set of raised decals on them .

Perfectlap 12-12-2011 09:28 AM

if you remove the velcro seat cushions, there should be a rectangular opening for the racing belts to pass through. The padding for your back should also be velcro.
If they are replicas I would venture that this would have been stitched in place...why put in the extra time for something that probably won't be removed.

Bala 12-12-2011 10:58 AM

Finally got an answer from the PO. Says they are Recaro style GT3 seats. They are carbon fiber with leather covering and cushions. The cushions do come off and held in place by velcro. There is a rectangular slot for the 3rd point of the seat belt to go thru. He said he paid around 1800 for them.

Anyone want to trade for black stock seats in excellent condition? Looking for motorized with heater. Even carrera (or other) seats that will fit the Boxster. I can do some rewiring if needed.

Thanks

fivepointnine 12-12-2011 03:34 PM

too bad you are across the country, I have heated, electric, black stock seats in almost perfect condition

pothole 12-12-2011 04:15 PM

Gorgeous seats, trading them for the crappy standard seats is a minor tragedy!

Send me pics and details. Maybe we can make it work. Nothing is impossible.:)

Maybe. But I have to find out myself I guess. I did drive a few with stock seats. Though not great I prefer them against these. Getting in and out of these (for me) is a pain in the butt. Literally! Then again I'm out to make the car as stock as possible.

I've shipped seats across the country via FedEx ground. Not that costly and U-Haul sells a box that fits one seat perfect.

Nope.... I agree with the OP; stock all the way.

what is your email?

Daniel R 12-12-2011 11:08 PM

While you are there, PM me with your email too.

I'm at a postal disadvantage being in Australia, although I do not mind to wear the cost. I will also be overseas for a month just after Christmas and obviously not using my car so I can be without seats for a while, so this could possibly work to both our advantage.

Bala 12-13-2011 08:02 AM

Email PMed to both.

Does this mean Recaro style GT3 or Recaro GT3? Recaro made all the GT3 seats for Porsche. They also made a simiar seat called the Pole Position that didn't have the Porsche look on top. I don't recall either having carbon fiber backing.

I also paid 1800 for mine but that was a deeply discounted price on account of their being slightly used.

fivepointnine 12-13-2011 09:44 AM

Never got your pm

jacabean 12-13-2011 12:52 PM

that means they are Rotec which you can buy for around 1200

Bala 12-13-2011 05:29 PM

Guys,
these are not original Recaro seats. I was told they are based on the Recaro GT3 style. I just took ownership and not very informed in this. If you like them and want to trade for stock seats that are in similar condition let me know.

thanks.

vijen6 12-14-2011 12:14 AM

Sorry for a slight thread jack .. but since we're on the topic of GT3 seats .. will the OEM 997 GT3 seats fit a 986 ?

Perfectlap 12-14-2011 03:10 PM

yep. You can use GT3 996 seats in a 997 as well. The mounting points must be exactly the same. No aftermarket rails required. I can swap in the stock seat in 10 minutes per side. Tip, don't use the socket extension for the torx bolts in the back, too much play.
