M96.22 & M96.23 Swap

Does anyone know if the M96.22 & M96.23 are direct-swappable? If not, what's the difference between the two? I may have a source on a 2003 M96.23 motor that I may want as a backup for my 2002 M96.22, if they're compatible.

Thanks in advance!

i don't know the codes, but if you want to go from a 5 chain to a 3 chain engine, the engine control is different.

Thanks, Quadcammer. I honestly don't know for sure whether I have a 5-chain or 3-chain. My car is a 2002 base and the donor car is a 2003. All I know from the catalog is that the 2002 has the M96.22 engine and the 2003 has the M96.23.

Do you by chance know which year they went from 5 chains to 3?

The year is 2003. So the engine you want to swap (3 chain) needs the ME 7.8 engine managment system, which is different from yours.

That answers that. Thank you.

FWIW one of the technicians at my independent shop owns a 2000-2002 S and a previous owner of the car installed a 3 chain engine from a 2003-2004. He has been chasing issues to get it to run better.

Thanks, I realize I wouldn't want to get into all that. I'd rather just do a direct swap.
