Use the key, dummy!

I left my Boxster in the garage for a week while I took a holiday vacation. I came back to the car and pressed the "door unlock" button on the remote, and oh no! The remote didn't work! This is my only key and for a moment I panicked. How was I supposed to get in the car if the remote didnt work!!

I got closer to the car, the remote didnt work. I went around to the other side of the car, the remote didnt work. I put the remote reeeaallly close to the windshield, but it still didn't unlock the car. Then....

Duh... put the key in the door lock and twist!

The interesting thing is that then the alarm went off!! And then I pressed the remote and it turned off the alarm. And after that the remote works just fine. It appears that the car alarm went into a hibernate mode and had to be woken up with this method. I couldn't find any mention of it in the manual.
