986 2.7 vs 911 3.2 daily driver?

Hey guys,

i ended up selling my 986 and currently driving a clk430, looking at getting into another porsche as my daily drive, im tossing up between a later model boxster than what i had 2.7 MY01+ or a mid 80's 911 carerra 3.2
d
oes anyone have any experience with the 80's air cooled 911's as daily drivers?

how much difference is there from 2.5 to 2.7?
my previous 2.5 had pulley, intake, headers, ECU flash, would it be similar to a stock 2.7?

Boxster S 3.2 would be the best of both worlds, but not in my budget atm

any input would be great.

A 25 year old car may need alot of work to keep running as a daily driver.

I currently own a 2001 Boxster base 2.7 litre. I only have had it 6 months but like it very much. Does not have a ton of power but enough for me(217hp). I test drove a secondhand 911 about 15 years ago and loved it. I promised myself I would get one but did not.Why because I wanted good air. cond. I believe air. cond. was not that good in those days and I wanted heated seats(i live in Canada!) as well. Well the Boxster has great a/c, good heated seats and was reasonably priced. I find the later years water cooled 911s dont have the feel or the good noise of the air cooled. Boxster sounds great. Hope this helps! One more thing is you might find the occasional seats in the 911 handy.

I have a 99 Boxster right now and love it. Previously I had a 71 911t but my biggest issue with the air cooled engines was the noise level in the cabin. Don't know about you but I worry about hearing loss due to sustained noise levels above 86 db. My 911T had 96 db at idle and over 100 db with the radio on and 70 mph. You might take that into consideration for your choice.

I would go the Boxster route for a daily driver. You can find some good deals out there on early Boxster Ss.

The early 2.7 will not be a big step up in terms of performance. Bottom line is that it's 200c and 15hp in a 1,300kg car.

Re the 3.2 have you driven one? I like to think of myself as pretty old school when it comes to sports car - maximum feedback, analogue controls etc. But I have to confess, I didn't get on well with the 3.2 I drove. It just felt old (car was owned by Porsche UK, so assume it was a good example), rather than old school.

By contrast, the 968 I drove felt spot on - meaty, old school controls, rather than old and agricultural.

I think for me, 911 love may start with the 964 (with the obvious exception of earlier specials).

Get out there and try one if you haven't already.

I have a few Porsches, including a Boxster S 3.2L and an '86 Carrera 3.2 liter that I am currently using as my daily driver. Even with Euro pistons, 964 cams, and a free flowing exhaust the Carrera feels a lot slower than the Box. That is mostly attributable to the wonky 915 transmission that will not be hurried, by God. The Carrera is raw, noisy, and relatively unsafe. It has ton of character though. In contrast the Box handles amazingly, has AC that works, and is tons more refined. I drive the Carrera just because it is a cheap beater car to me (I love having a couple "beater" rat 911's). I love both cars, but they are very different and serve different purposes to me. If I had to pick just one or one to drive cross country, the Boxster would win without a second thought....
