Problem in second week of ownership

Was standing in the lights, then heard a noise like a piece of metal fall down. Immediately turn off the engine and look around, and then realized that engine is in the middle so something really serious happened. Started the engine, WOW working, Thanks Lord, its working, without any problems, sounding as sounds always. It was big relief guys, you can imagine how we all engine failure phobic. Then i tried to shift the gears nothing happened, the car stayed in neutral. So i figure out this is or clutch (however guys the clutch stiffness seems same) or a transmission. Any other ideas?
Sincerely yours
zagit

how familiar are you with driving 5 or 6 speed transmissions?

for all my life was using only manual

for last year, z3 manual owner, no problem at all.
I was really to be nice to car, do the shifting as smooth as possible, however that unfortunate event finally happened.
