car dead wife mad
engine will not start . starter turns over engine but no start. turned key off but dash lights stay on. ran great 2 days ago ? thanks for your help on this !
|
I think you have a bigger issue that the car will not start..........the wife is mad. :)
|
I'm not sure why the wife would be mad because the car won't start. If it turns over but won't ignite it's either: fuel, air or spark. Start with one and make sure you have all three. Start with your gas, it's easiest. Dash lights stay on for a while after turning the car off.
|
You should look for a shop thats willing to lend you a spark tester. Spark testing is super straightforward :P
|
what do you mean by dash lights? you mean the odo? or the "idiot lights"?
have you replaced the ignition switch? could be starter... Boxster S Starter Issue - YouTube |
With the 993s there is an issue with the DME relay. This is the module that controls the fuel pump. I wonder if this is also an issue with Boxsters. Keep us posted. Oh, and good luck with the wife; happy wife, happy life.

Thank you all for helping. No water, garage kept. no key switch done that I know of. starter turns engine but no start. lights on dash were clock and another one , not idiot lights. I know there is a delay, but waited and then disconected the battery. Wife mad because she loves to take the car any time she can.

My guess - fuel pump. These fail with no warning. The engine will crank but the engine won't fire. A couple of weeks ago, I drove mine to doggie daycare, dropped the pooch off, and went to start the car. Forty-five minutes later, the car was on a flatbed to the shop. They popped in a new pump and the car fired right up.
|
My thoughts also. No smell at the exhaust. Did just try to install new ignition switch. The spare new one is defective. It is 45 degrees off on rotation to line up with slot . Played for 2 hours aligning slot (off-on-start) Made in god knows where, can someone help!!! uro parts 4a0905849b A miserable afternoon. My wife keeps asking if it is fixed yet. 99 2.5 90k 3rd owner garaged all records Thanks to all, Max

Better to have the car dead than the wife! :D
Hope you get it sorted. |
Try spraying wd40 (not starter fluid) into the intake, if it catches for a second, then you know its a fuel problem. No catch, its the spark.

I thank all of you for helping. New fuel pump on order. Also tried to order a key switch from Porsche but was told to go after the relay in the trunk area which is controled by the box under the seat. This controls the fuel injection ? Yikes ? I did bypass the fuel pump relay with a jump wire and did not hear a a pump running. There was current draw on the jump wire as a little spark occured each time of connection. So.. the europarts.com key switch was a bust, no pump noise with power to pump. Taking Advil after the key switch afternoon exercise. Thanks again to all of you. Wife calmed down and took the Volvo. Sorry FUEL PUMP ! VDO oem $ 216.95 delivered and done with this problem.
|
Glad you got the car running again with minimal expense and aggravation. I believe someone noted not to let the cars get too low on fuel, as the fuel also acts as a coolant for the pump. I try to never let mine go below 1/4 tank.

When I pulled the old pump out I noticed that it was FULL of gas, saturated. Not just the pump area but the motor area also. I think that after 13 years of sitting in gas a seal gave up and flooded the whole pump. I noticed the electrical connector as well as the housing was brittle. It was time for it to go, I feel. Thanks Again to all of you !!!! Ps There is a procedure for doing this change out. Read it before you try !!!!!

Did you need a special tool to remove the big ring on the top of the tank? I expect my car will need a new pump some day and remember something about a special tool. I'm kind of afraid of working on a fuel pump inside my garage. Visions of the house burning down to the ground.

As far as the tool goes, the MB tool was $85 so I would expect the Porsche one to be more -- I would try a belt wrench if I had to do the job. Regards, paul... |
Dale, No special tool...Just go to boxter fuel pump page down a little to best way to drain a fuel pump This is a Pelican Parts tech article. go to Pelican tech article boxter fuel pump replacement 986/987 follow their instructions to the T read it twice so you understand ( I had to) I would have destroyed a few things if I had not read this article. Great article !!! I pushed the car out of the garage and away from the home to do this as I was concerned also. Every thing came out just like the article told me. Including the CHISEL AND HAMMER !!! Yes...CHISEL AND HAMMER Good luck Once you do it , you could do it every day !!!

...so I take it the wife is happy again? :D
|
replaced mine last year. very little gasoline actually lost. hardest part was getting the new one back in place. just followed pedro's write up.
Replace the Fuel Filter no smoking, stay away from open flames - the usual. keep the garage door open or do it outside. i actually went to my local ford quick lube place who has been cool enough to allow me to "rent" their lift for the few times i need the car up in the air. |
Overdrive- they are never -always happy. Tony--- Yes it is a little hard to center the pump over the locking collar that is part of the gas tank floor. You have to be careful not to tear the intake screen. Tony, we used to live in OC. now in eastern NC
