Another Epic Road Trip
 

Hey all,

I know there have been some well documented road trips on here recently. I am going to do my best to post photos and keep this thread updated.

I will be driving from Seattle to Cape Cod for my sisters wedding and back again. I estimate around 6500 miles total in less than 2 weeks.

I have done many cross country trips in my 944 solo. This will be the first lateral trip in the Boxster and I will have my GF with me as well. I have replaced nearly everything that was worn or might fail. I will be taking some tools and spares and means to patch things if "fecal matter hits the proverbial rotating blade assembly".

I will also be attempting another time-lapse of the trip too.

This trip should put me at about 95K miles so not quite the 100K mark but close. I love road-tripping and Porsche's will always be my first choice. Although I would admit that a Panamera would be more comfortable, the Boxster is about as good as it gets for enjoyment.

Anyone have any suggestions for things to bring? I have cleaners, tire repair stuff, hand tools, tape, flashlights, ear plugs, sunscreen, towels, lint roller and so on.

I'm getting excited! I leave Friday Morning.

Maybe stating some obvious things or things you've already got in mind/have checked, but:

- check spare, jack, tools in tool kit
- check the spare
- give your drain holes a check in case you get caught in some random poor weather
- spare headlight & taillight bulbs
- check the spare ;)
- take a look at all that plastic panelling under the front of the car, make sure nothing's loose/missing
- hats?
- polarized sunglasses?
- air filter recent/new?
- sweet picture-taking skillz?

I won't go anywhere anymore without a spare ignition switch, after getting stranded when the last one went out. Had a spare at home but that doesn't do any good if you're not at home. They are so small, it is easy to throw one in the tool kit along with a small screwdriver. I also keep a spare serpentine belt in the spare tire cover. You don't need to carry the 24mm(15/16") wrench, they can be found anywhere. A belt isn't always available if you are far away from large towns/cities and it also doesn't take up much space.
Taking I-90 out all the way? If you take it all the way to Boston, you will have traveled the entire length of it, end to end. Always wanted to try that someday. Never been to the East Coast. Have a nice trip and can't wait to see the pics.

I know I would have a bottle of Ibuprofen...that's a long trip.

Rent the tux when you get to the Cape.

A bottle of Tequila, Grand Marnier, Sweet and Sour, some Nellie & Joe’s...oh and salt. For those evenings you are staying at a small motel and don't want to head back out. Mix up some Margaritas, the GF will be glad you did ;)

How many days will this trip take?

Spare bulbs! Good idea, I forgot about those. I will be taking a spare belt. The WP is new as is the motor mount, oil, coolant, etc.

I have no spare being a 987. But I do have both the sealant and tire plugs, compressor and tire gauge.

I will be picking up the tux on the cape so no worries there.

I don't like to drink too much on these trips, but the tequila sounds like a good idea. I am planning on 2 days to Rochester, NY. Which is 2 days of about 21 hours. Camping in Fargo, ND in between. A few days roaming around New England, a few days for the wedding and then 2-3 days booking back across the country.

I have done all of I-90 at one time or another but this will be all in one shot. I don't like to do more than 24 hours in one shot. I have done over 36 but I won't do that again.

6500 miles in two weeks!! Wow! Will you have time to take and post pictures? Looking forward to seeing and reading about your adventure. I really enjoyed my road trip last month (5800 miles)... I'm ready to go again!

I even bought a point and shoot camera just for the trip. I have a feeling that my passenger will get bored and take lots of photos even if I forget. So I should have plenty of pictures to post!

T-2.5 days!

Spare battery for the camera and maybe a cigarette lighter charger for said battery(s)...in case your navigator runs the battery down you can switch quickly and we won't miss but a beat of the picture taking. ;)

I may be mostly alone on this one, but I was not aware that 987s did not come with spares...now I'm kinda glad I went with an oldie...how'd Porsche get away with th---nevermind, I should know better than to finsh that question... :rolleyes:

BTW, what car is that reflected in your car's paint? I know that's no 944...just curious.

No spare? That's the first thing I would have. Then the AAA card.

I'm not too worried about not having a spare. If I can't plug it effectively then i will just have it towed. I have an upgraded AAA membership due to a blown motorcycle tire. So I think I'll be ok. I just hope that I have better luck thank my bike.

in addition to the sunscreen, bring hats. hard to get the sunscreen between the hairs on your head and having a sunburned head is no fun.

cash for the tolls. you're looking at a tollroads 70% of the way from indiana to MA.

Vise Grips, large adjustable wrench, small adjustable wrench, Duct Tape, and roofing caulk that will dry in rain. God forbid you develop a leak in any part of the cooling system, those tools should enable you to access the leak and patch it long enough to get where you are going.

I also have a bit of a preference to a portable car charger/compressor with a built in flashlight. But they ain't tiny :)

My wife and I are taking a 2wk/2000mi road trip in Oct. to Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah and home. Hoping to see extraordinary scenery and lots of wildlife in the National parks with very few people this time of year. Unfortunately the fully track prepared Boxster doesn't meet wifey's minimum creature comfort standards so we will be driving the Lexus. We may see some early snow so we are bringing chains and a bunny suit. I will bring a simple tool bag and 12v compressor with tire plugs. I will also bring lots of No-doze as I tend to nod off shortly after climbing into that big overly cushy leather seat.

Good travels so far. In 8 hours we have made it to Butte Montana. Rolling average of around 80mph and about 25mpg with mountains in the mix. I'll post photos once I get wifi again.


Od, that is my gf's dodge. One box on wheels to go.
