Who beats on their car?

I beat the hell out of mine. In a good way. No over revs on the counter, no miss shifts etc. I just love to drive it the way it was designed to handle. Oil gets changed every 1000 miles for me :). Just want to see if you are a mary with your car or how you drive?

I'm right there with you. I drive it pretty hard. I've made some snotty comments on the forum before about being too over protective of their car or babying them too much. I guess to each his own.

I owned the car for just under 2 years and I'm ready for my 3rd set of rear tires.

And I've noticed the car likes being ran harder better. I use to have this pesky CEL come on every couple of days and then go off after a few starts, but it drove me nuts. It was an O2 sensor and I opted to not throw $ at it because it'd always go away within a day. Since I've been running the car a little harder I've only seen the light once in almost 3 months. It went out again 2 starts later and I've yet to see it again.

Yeah, me too. Ever since I started reading about how IMS problems are seen, seemingly, in direct proportion to people 'babying' their Boxster, I've started gettin' a lot more aggressive with her. Not that I wasn't before...I just make more of a point of it these days. I've discovered something in the process: It's wonderful to have an excuse to run the heck out of a machine that's (as we all know) REALLY FUN to to do exactly that with. :D

Do I "beat the hell out of mine"? Maybe not quite...but I come a lot closer to it than I used to.

You really change your oil every 1K???

Even gunfire is known to occur during some of my "drives" !

Sensible warm up, no over revving, good maintenance. With that we totaly enjoy our canyon runs (best driving roads in Utah!). After a good workout the engine runs so much better compared to babying in the city......

With my Durametric I checked that I am sometimes at the revlimiter but the engine was never over.

Same for brakes, use them good and they work just fine!

Respect the mechanics and they will thank you.

Later,
Andy

My signature says it all.

Since the realization set in that most major repairs on the car (even the IMS upgrade) are worth almost close to my car's value, I drive it like it's the last time I will every time.

It's my DD, so I don't know how smart that is, but it puts a smile on my face at least twice a day, more on weekends!

Johnny,
i'd love to have that as a full-size poster

I don't beat on my car... but I do use all of her. She is a track rat and a canyon carver. Not once has she been to the grocery store.

(careful warmup, monthly periodic and preventative maintenance, no fast and furious gear changes, few rev limits, lots of fresh tires, two Boxster Spec X Time Trial championships, 6 PCA track records.)

Yes I change my oil every 1000 to 1500 miles. I might drive her only 3k a year sometimes. Glad to hear I am not the only one enjoying our cars. Like others said maintenance and good driving will not hurt the cars.

ProjectM96 08-31-2011 06:04 AM

Why did I buy a Porsche?

Because it is a sports car. I bought it to drive it hard and fast, like a sports car.

Porsche's are meant to be driven hard. Their purpose was originally to be used as race cars.

If you baby it like a Ferrari or Lamborghini, it would most likely catch on fire and die. :)

The very simple answer to that question is , ME! I love every minute of it. My 98 is well maintained and well used. As a summer only car I put on over 10K per year and it is not my DD. Ed

I just spent three days driving time trials at Laguna Seca. Total track time: 5hrs, 45mins. Engine was never below 5K RPM the entire time on track.

Car, engine, and driver never seemed happier! :D

You are so lucky. Laguna Seca is easily my favorite and most played track on Forza Motorsports and Gran Turismo.

What was your best track time? I want to see how close I can get to it in the game.

gmboxster 08-31-2011 11:39 AM

Changing oil every 1 - 1.5K sure seems extremely excessive. And expensive even if you do it yourself. But hey, engines DO love new oil.

Stroked & Blown 08-31-2011 02:24 PM

I drive conservatively on the street & am on top of maintenance.

but...

I am not gentile on the 2 mile AX course we usually run. The box has seen the rev limiter & a few cones in its day.

IMS replacement added piece of mind & claybar takes care of the cone marks.

My fastest time was 1:56. No excuses, that was the best I had in me.

Eric523 09-02-2011 02:12 PM

Yep, drive it hard every chance I get. Only a track car nowadays. 136k original miles and counting!

I was at the same track event as Mr. Stone this past weekend. Ran a fastest of 1:42:2 on some Hoosier track tires.

and here is a video from the second place car and our battle. (his digital tach is off, not actually doing 10k RPM)
