986 engine 'knocking' sound. Help
I Purchased my '02 Boxster 2 months ago and I have always heard a strange type of tapping, knocking, ticking, whatever you want to call it, type sound coming from the engine. When I do a fresh cold start it is a tad more noticeable, but slightly dies down just a bit after it is warmed up. I can hear it the loudest when I put my ear to the passenger side vent, and when I accelerate, the knocking sound speeds up right with the engine. I included a link to a video I took so you guys can hear it. Anybody have a clue?

Did you have a PPI performed prior to your purchase?

Sounds like it might be a "stuck lifter" do a search on this and other sites to
read about ( and hear ) others with same issue. |
If you're using Mobil 1 0W40, change to a different brand...5 or 10W40. Do a search; lots of discussions on the topic. I run Castrol Syntec 10W40 and my engine sounds very nice.

+1 on the Castrol - I use 5w40. Big difference in mechanical noise from the Mobil1 0w40.

@jrblackbox Yes I did get a PPI done. They found a few non-mechanical issues. Said everything was mechanically good, but I just know that sound is not normal.
@nnewell I just checked out the video with the stuck lifter and while its a very similar type of knocking sound, it's nowhere near as loud as that...And I'm not sure if the sound of a stuck lifter increases with time, but so far it hasn't. @jmatta and @Mark_T It does have Castrol 5w40 in it right now. I actually got an oil change a few days after I purchased the car. And I'm not sure what oil the previous owner had, but it made that slight sound before and has still done it after the oil change. |
Sounds like sticky or damaged lifters to me too.

Just for fun, check for an exhaust leak.

Just came back from the mechanic. It actually turned out to be the fuel injector pulse. He let me listen with the stethoscope and sure enough that's where the sound was coming from. It's just a little bit noisier than normal but everything was fine. I just bought some Techtron Fuel System Cleaner to see if that quiets it down a little bit. Thanks guys.
