New Water Pump In/ Now boiling over..
My water pump went out last weekend. (78,000 miles). I'm the third owner of this car but i'm pretty sure it was the original unit because the gaskets were stock.

Anyway I removed the old one and all the pieces of the impeller i could. Replaced the pump and put on a new belt. Topped of the coolant and ran the engine and topped off again.

On my shake down cruise the car is over heating. The coolant is boiling out. Temps hitting 200 +. My first thought is that the thermostat is stuck shut...

Any other thoughts before I order a new thermostat tomorrow?

i know that bleeding the coolant system correctly is of the utmost importance .

jacabean is probably right on. You probably have air in the system and you need to get it out for it to work properly.

As well as making sure that all the air is out of the system as per jacabean & ddb suggests, if the water pump impeller broke up, just make sure that you removed (or account for) all the broken off pieces...A lot of bits can lodge in the thermostat housing for instance
It has been known that the broken plastic from the impeller can block in the cylinder head coolant passageways with not very nice results....

another place that they accumulate is in the heater core.

Piece back together the old pump impellar and hope you got all the pieces. A piece
lodged in the engine could be disastrous.

I would flush the system.

Thanks guys, didn't bleed the system correctly the first time. I followed the steps posted by DDB and just got back from a 10 mile shake down run. Seems to be back to normal, running at 185 degrees.

As far as impeller pieces go....i think i have them all, got my fingers crossed until i get a new low temp thermostat and start wrenching again!
